That poem was added in the 50's, I think. It sure doesn't mean we'll take ILLEGALS. That was meant for legal immigrants, who go through the system so that we know who they are, if they have criminal records, if they have diseases, if they can support themselves and won't be on the "public dole" (is that still a law for legal immigrants?), etc.

These people are biting the hand that feeds them, and maybe now, they'll see their mistake - the NERVE of them taking what we have given them, and hating us, and DARING to march around OUR country with Mexican flags!!

So, go home, already - good riddance!!

This is the greatest country in the world!!! We are the first to respond to everything! I love to see natural disasters happen here because it shows how other countries can careless about the suffering and death of our citizens (ie Katrina) remember when some countries wouldn't even offer aid to us!!! But if a country was flattened tomorrow the US would be there with a billion dollar check to give the poor country to get back on its feet!!!! I mean the hate for our country reaches the ends of the globe and we still bend over backwards for these third world dictatorships that wish to see us gone, including Mexico!!! I say close the border, no more legal immigrants or working visas, and time to crawl back into our shell and fix up our domestic problems here and let the giant go to sleep once again!!!! Back to the Superpower to be feared, not the pansy yes man that our country is today!!!

That "poem" was added years after we received the Statue of Liberty. I think it should be removed, because it sounds like an invitation for everyone to come here because we will take care of them.

It is time someone who can get the word out reminds everyone, but especially the illegals, in this country of a simple fact.

If Americans were not the most charitable, kind people in the world, they would not have gotten a toehold in this country. We realized they were illegal, and as long as they did not bankrupt our citizens, take our jobs, kill and injury our citizens, they were allowed here and were treated well. Some people did exploit them, but most just let them be, and helped when they could. This generosity was repaid with crime, drugs, demands, etc.

Just wonder who is the haters here?

I feel no need to argue with them. You're right it's just plain awful here, so go home. No one is keeping you here.

That poem was written to reflect the feelings of immigrants coming to Ellis Island 100 years ago. Like many have said, they were legal immigrants subject to many requirements, plus there were absolutly no welfare benefits in those days. Also the US was not rich at the time so the "poor" who came here were really really poor, the average world citizen at the time was better off in their own country. By the standards of the time most illegal aliens coming here today are well off, not poor!

Either that plaque needs to be put in the Smithsonian or an addendum added that today 100 years later the US is no longer a developing country and cannot allow every poorer person in the world to move here!

Maybe the words of Barbara Jordan can be added for today's perspective: "It is both a right and a responsibility of a democratic society to have a properly regulated legal immigration system that serves the national interest. "

Yes, it is a poem. It did not reflect the intent of the Statue of Liberty. And the poem did not reflect the views of the majority of the population at the time.......In fact, the statue was not even connected to immigration until FDR made a speach there...thats right, in the 1930s. Even then, FDR's speach was more a praise of the descendants of fighters of the Revolutionary War.

The statue has been taken out of context, and the poem has been blown way out of proportion and relevance. This country is about a hell of a lot more than simply immigration.......That is what liberals would have us believe. That this country is just a gathering place for every nation and cultutre in the world. At the other end we have people who believe that America is about nothing other than making money. As I said, America is about a hell of a lot more than that. No nation can hang their identity on such baseless notions.
