Swiss Miss? Does Bachmann know something we don't: Michele claims Swiss citizenship

    Michele Bachmann claims Swiss citizenship

By TIM MAK | 5/8/12 7:19 PM EDT Updated: 5/8/12 9:23 PM EDT

Rep. Michele Bachmann is now officially a Swiss miss.

Bachmann (R-Minn.) recently became a citizen of Switzerland, making her eligible to run for office in the tiny European nation, according to a Swiss TV report Tuesday.

Arthur Honegger, a reporter for public broadcaster Schweizer Fernsehen, told POLITICO the Swiss consulate in Chicago has confirmed that the former Republican presidential candidate became a citizen March 19.

The Swiss consulate in Chicago covers the state of Minnesota, which Bachmann represents.

Marcus Bachmann, the congresswoman’s husband since 1978, reportedly was eligible for Swiss citizenship due to his parents’ nationality — but only registered it with the Swiss government Feb. 15. Once the process was finalized on March 19, Michele automatically became a citizen as well, according to Honegger.

Bachmann’s three youngest children are also now Swiss citizens, and her two older children are eligible to apply for a fast-track citizenship process, according to an email from the consulate provided and translated by Honegger.

Bachmann’s office confirmed that the congresswoman had received Swiss citizenship, and attributed the decision to her children.

“Congresswoman Bachmann’s husband is of Swiss descent, so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978. However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family,” said Bachmann spokesperson Becky Rogness.

The Minnesota congresswoman was interviewed by Swiss national public television in D.C. on Tuesday while with a group of Swiss parliamentarians.

“My husband is a 100 percent Swiss, and his parents were raised in Switzerland, they were married there, they came to the United States, they bought a farm in Wisconsin and raised their three sons there,” said Bachmann.

Asked if she would run for office in Switzerland — as she is now eligible to do — Bachmann joked that the competition “would be very stiff because they are very good,” referring to the parliamentarians behind her.

Each Swiss citizen belongs specifically to a canton, and Bachmann’s is the canton of Thurgau in Northeast Switzerland.

“It’s tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland,” said Bachmann.

The Minnesota congresswoman ran for president this election cycle, and won the Ames straw poll last year, but a sixth-place showing in the Iowa caucuses led to her dropping out.

Bachmann’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Swiss consulate in Chicago was closed when contacted by POLITICO.

CORRECTION: Marcus Bachmann’s Swiss citizenship was filed on Feb. 15 and granted on March 19. An earlier version of this article said the registration was filed on March 19.

She is getting the heck out of dodge and moving to Switzerland. Don't let to door hit you on the way out. Funny thing is, with the NDAA, that Army field manual, and the creeping police state, I wonder if she knows something we don't... well were not officially supposed to know if you get what I mean.

I've been told that proving my Polish ancestry entitles me to Polish citizenship even though I'm 4th-5th generation American. My friend also says I should try to get it before any changes in the law might deny me in the future. He believes dual citizenship to be a great asset.

I believe dual citizenship should be against the law. Yet if it is allowed by other nations...

    there is a huge differance here.... she voted for the NDAA, Indefinate detention; the ability for the POTUS to assasinate Americans... after voting for all of these draconian laws;

THEN.... she flys the coop to safety while the Proles get beaten to a pulp, Indefinately detained, assassinated or just plain disapeared as ole Barb sits by the fireplace raking in the VERY Healthy Government retirement for the rest of her life

    Michele Bachmann is Swiss now

Former White House hopeful and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann can now run for political office in Switzerland, CNN reports.

“Congresswoman Bachmann’s husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978,” a spokesperson for the Republican said. “However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family.”

Bachmann’s ancestors emigrated from Norway generations ago, but her husband Marcus’ parents are both Swiss by birth. According to Politico, Mr. Bachmann had registered with the Swiss government earlier this year, which automatically made Michele one of the millions of Americans with dual citizenship once the process was completed.

And yes, that does mean she could try to start a new political career in the land of Democracy and cuckoo clocks.

But Bachmann recently told Swiss TV the chances of that happening are slim because of the “very stiff” competition she would face from the already “very good” Swiss parliamentarians.

Michele Bachmann is now a Swiss citizen.

The Minnesota congresswoman and former Republican presidential candidate was recently granted dual citizenship, Bachmann's office confirmed Tuesday night, according to CNN.

"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," spokeswoman Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."

And, according to an interview with Swiss TV, Bachmann, who is currently seeking a fourth term in Congress after her failed bid for the White House, is now also eligible to run for office in the tiny European country.

Asked if she'd be interested in seeking office in Switzerland, Bachmann joked that "there's a lot of competition ... and they're very good."

Bachmann didn't like being Swiss - rejects citizenship two days later

It turns out that Michele Bachmann’s recently acquired Swiss citizenship had as many holes in it as the delicious cheese of the same name.

Only days after her office announced that former presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann was granted citizenship with the country of Switzerland, the current US congresswoman is already announcing that she wants that status to be revoked.

On Thursday, Rep. Bachmann (R-Minnesota) issued a statement announcing that she was asking the Swiss Consulate to terminate her rights as a citizen. Her office confirmed earlier in the week that, along with her family, Congresswoman Bachmann had recently become a dual-citizen of both the US and Swiss. A spokesman for the Swiss Embassy tells Reuters, however, that Bachmann activated that citizenship two months ago in March.

If Bachmann has her way, that status will be stripped away soon. She delivered a statement to reporters this week announcing that she intends on being a citizen of the US and Switzerlandonly.

"I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen," pleads the congresswoman. “I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America.”

Reuters adds that Rep. Bachmann dismissed reporters’ questions about her allegiance to America.

Earlier this week on Tuesday, Bachmann spokesperson Becky Rogness said that the congresswoman and her family had been eligible for dual-citizenship since she wed her husband, Marcus Bachmann, in 1978. Only recently, however, had her family “wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship.”

When asked by Swiss TV if she would consider running for office abroad, Bachmann joked, "there's a lot of competition … and they're very good."

May be reading wrong but sounds like her Husband went through the process not her which likely started quite a while back and she simply got it as a spouse automatically.

In the end I can't fault her or anyone else trying to find another place to go. The US is collapsing and if the next election turns out bad the US is simply doomed. I see the US falling within 5 years if Obama wins again and if someone else depends if they have the balls if the US will recover or just collapse slower.

I see without a few key changes the US collapsing.

    1. Enforce immigration laws to the fullest and cut back on current legal immigration along with legal immigration comming from societies and cultures that agree with the US Culture.

    2. End free education for all NON Citizens and no discounts at any school that recieves public dollars.

    3. Make the official language in the US English Only making all government connected sectors English only from local to fed.

    4. Stop the free healthcare society. If you don't have insurance and don't have cash you don't get care (Medicare would still exist and Medicaid would be toned down). Healthcare costs drop significantly and insurance costs also, and those paying stop footing the bill for those who don't. As it stands 30% of Medical Care users pay.
