At Vatican, Sanders ties himself to Pope Francis, blasts income inequality

At Vatican, Sanders ties himself to Pope Francis, blasts income inequality

By Ben Wolfgang - The Washington Times - Friday, April 15, 2016

Breaking from the campaign trail just days before the crucial New York primary, Sen. Bernard Sanders allied himself with Pope Francis Friday and said the entire world must fight against income inequality and climate change.

“In our country and around the world, we are seeing a handful of very, very wealthy people become wealthier while most people are becoming poorer,” Mr. Sanders said in a brief press conference in Vatican City, where he addressed a conference on social and environmental justice.

“It is immoral, and together we have got to change that,” the Vermont senator and self-described democratic socialist said. “I have been enormously impressed by Pope Francis speaking out and his visionary views about creating a moral economy, an economy that works for all people, not just the people on top. And what he has said over and over again is we cannot just allow the market to do what the market does. That is not acceptable.”

His comments come just 12 hours after a contentious Brooklyn debate with presidential primary rival Hillary Clinton, a forum marked by harsh personal attacks and open questions about whether the other is truly qualified to be president.

New York Democrats will go to the polls April 19, and polls show Mrs. Clinton with a commanding double-digit lead over Mr. Sanders.

While Mrs. Clinton left New York to attend high-priced West Coast fundraisers over the weekend, Mr. Sanders flew to the Vatican immediately after Thursday night’s debate.

He used his brief time there to not only denounce income inequality but also to take aim at climate change, an issue Pope Francis has made a central part of his broader message of social justice.

“The greed of the fossil fuel industry is literally destroying our planet,” Mr. Sanders said. “The scientists are virtually unanimous. Climate change is real and it is caused by human activity. It is already causing devastating problems all over this planet, and whether the fossil fuel industry likes it or not, we have got to transform our energy system away from fossil fuels … We have got to confront the greed of people who are so much more concerned about their own billions than the future of our children and the future of our planet.”

Mr. Sanders will return to the New York campaign trail Saturday.

People are becoming poorer because hard working taxpayers are paying for the irresponsible "breed and feed" programs. Many hard working families choose to have less kids...within their budget to support them.

All the while, the takers continue to make bad decisions, not get educated, do not want to work and have 8 kids with 8 different baby daddies. This needs to stop, free vasectomies and tubal ligations. I do not want to pay for all YOUR kids, and taxpayers should not have to. They can get help for one child...on a limited time frame and that is it. So don't go have any more and think you are staying on the gravy train living off the back of others for generations. McDonalds was never meant to support a family of SIX.

How about old doddering fool Bernie bring back the hard work ethic, pay your own dang bills, morals and personal responsibility in this Country.

This is so wrong for so many reasons. I'll hit upon a few that readily come to my mind.

The notion that a religion, any religion, should have power or domination over a national economy let alone a global economy on the basis of a religious morality is not only insane, it is dangerous. The word "moral" is a colloquial term, one that means one thing to one and something else to another. Yes, we as Americans can find large groups of ourselves who view business and economics in a similar manner. But even in our country where church and state are separate, supposedly, we have vast differences in opinion as to what is right or moral when it comes to business and our economy. We can't even agree as a nation that the income tax is bad, not even from all Republicans who by the founding principals of our party should know it is, most of us so far at least from a nation founded on the provisions that prohibit an income tax. To have an income tax, the states had to amend the US Constitution to allow it. And what was the result? Well, we have 94 million working age Americans out of the work force and $21 trillion of national debt.

When you support a Pope or any religion meddling in the government and business affairs of their own nation, let alone the affairs of 196 countries in the world, we reach a very dangerous time. This can promote revolutions, not the nice little political revolution we're having in the US during our 2016 anti-Establishment elections, but real revolutions that overthrow governments, create chaos, murder opponents, take over assets and resources and enslave the people to a different form of tyranny than the one they were revolting against, but a tyranny nonetheless.

We can not have a President who wants to meddle through religious views of what is or is not a "moral economy" in this country or any other. Fortunately, our country has a system for change, but most countries experiencing severe income equality do not. Our problems are monumental, but to fix them will come at the expense of other nations currently robbing US through immigration and trade. We can not fix our country's immigration and trade problems while fanning a flame globally to fix everyone else's.

This is a major difference between Trump and Sanders. Trump knows that to fix our own, which is his responsibility as President of the United States, we have to change the way we interact with the world. We need to secure our borders, send illegal aliens back to their home countries, reduce/pause massive excess legal immigration, put our own citizens and legal residents back to work, and bring our jobs home from overseas to eliminate our own poverty and solve our own outrageous income inequality. Then other countries will have to adjust from making money off of our economy to making money off their own economy with obviously lots of international trade benefits, but not with trade deficits that rob our jobs and money supply or immigration that overpopulates our nation, steals jobs from our citizens and grows poverty in our country.

Sanders has just shown that while he sees the inequities and wants a better life for people, he has absolutely no clue on how to achieve it for our country. Sanders, as well-meaning on some issues as he seems to be, is not the person who has made any difference while in government service and won't fix a thing as he moves up the food chain to President. Instead he's exhibiting characteristics of an actual authoritarian socialist, not the harmless little democratic socialist, he claims to be.

There's a huge difference between candidate Trump who simply through his common sense, intelligence, track record and loyalty to the American People started a "movement", and a Bernie Sanders who advocates "political revolution".

Americans want and need the Trump "movement" to take our country back to generate peace and prosperity in our own country, not a Sanders global "political revolution" that will without a doubt lead to WWIII.

Over-breeding, which is having more children than you can sustain successfully, results in overpopulation that even a nation can not sustain successfully. And that's where we are in the US today. If one looks at our failure on this issue, one need only to look to many other countries to see where the "morals" of the Pope and Vatican and other religions as well have generated a culture of "born to die" from starvation and the consequences of abject poverty.

Americans have known since the 1960's the threat of overpopulation which is why there was a zero population growth strategy based on replacement. This was voluntary of course, just everyone being responsible and doing what they felt they needed to do. And behold, by the late 1980's, Americans had reached that goal with on average birth rates equal to replacement or slightly below in most years. So what happened? Welfare programs paid on number of children encouraging more children for more benefits. A Pro-Life Movement spawned to prevent women from terminating unwanted pregnancies. Catholics continued to condemn birth control and abortions. Other religions got on board with that for some untold reason. Immigration advocates pushed for open borders to import breeders. And here we are, a bloated overpopulated country unable to sustain our own population.

And now, it's a monumental mess. Donald Trump can fix the immigration and trade problems. But Americans have to fix the breeding problem themselves and I pray we do. We did once, we can do so again.

Absolutely, posylady. It sure was taught in our schools right along with what is a natural born citizen: born in the US to 2 US citizens. Our schools have let US down.
