NBC: Gingrich wins Ga.; Va. and Vt. too early to call

NBC: Gingrich wins Ga.; Va. and Vt. too early to call

    By Michael O'Brien, msnbc.com

Updated 7 p.m. ET — NBC News has projected Newt Gingrich as the winner of the primary in Georgia as polls begin to close in some of the 11 states with Super Tuesday contests. Mitt Romney leads in the Vermont and Virginia's primaries, though both of those races are too early to call.

Georgia is the state where the former House speaker served as a congressman, and which Gingrich had said was a must-win contest for him in order to forge ahead with his candidacy.

The Peach State was just one of 11 states playing host to nominating contests on Tuesday, which were poised to put the battle for the Republican presidential nomination on a path toward conclusion — or, alternatively, on a route that threatens a more prolonged, bitter fight.

Voters show up to cast ballots in the Republican presidential primary on Super Tuesday in Duluth, Georgia, March 6, 2012.

More delegates were up for grabs on this Super Tuesday than had been previously allocated to the remaining GOP candidates after two months of voting, according to NBC News projections. Between the 10 states holding primaries or caucuses and Wyoming, which will allocate five of its 26 delegates, a total of 424 of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination are at stake.

The stakes were arguably highest in Ohio, where front-running candidate Mitt Romney had squared off principally against former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Both Romney and Santorum spent much of Monday in Ohio re-fighting their battle from just a week earlier in Michigan, where the former eked out a win in the state where he was raised.

During the intervening week, Romney has eaten into an advantage Santorum held in the polls; the state was seen as locked in a virtual tie between the two candidates by the end of Monday.
