Each week, it seems another Democrat lawmaker announces their retirement from Congress. On Thursday, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) joined the growing list. It is only January, but 11 Democrat lawmakers have said they are quitting at the end of this current term.

Sen. Tom Harkin (IA)

Sen. Carl Levin (MI)

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (WV)


Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY)

Rep. George Miller (CA)

Rep. Jim Moran (VA)

Rep. Jim Matheson (UT)

Rep. Mike McIntyre (NC)

Rep. Bill Owens (NY)

Rep. Henry Waxman (CA)

All the lawmakers, with the exception of Owens had a lot of seniority and would have been in line for Chairman gavels on important committees if Democrats took control of Congress. The retirements could be an indication of how unlikely they think that is.

Two of the House seats, in UT and NC, are almost guaranteed to flip to the Republicans. Romney won those districts by 40 and 19 points respectively. That means Democrats need to flip 19 seats now, rather than 17.

Reviews Are In: The “Exodus of Moderate Republicans From Congress” Continues

When Congressman Jim Gerlach (PA-06) announced his retirement yesterday he marked the twelfth House Republican to either retire or resign from office this cycle in what US News has called an “exodus of moderates.”

Many of these retirements come from what the Associated Press called the “shrinking number of Republican moderates in the House” who are leaving from toss-up districts and are expanding the 2014 battlefield. They’ve decided it’s better to retire than try to defend this indefensible Republican Congress’s reckless dysfunction that is hurting the middle class and failing to create jobs.

You have to ask yourself: if you were a member of this dysfunctional Tea Party Republican Congress, wouldn’t you want to jump ship too?

• US News: “Jim Gerlach Adds to Exodus of Moderate Republicans From Congress.”
• NY Times: “Mr. Gerlach joined a steady trickle of Republican retirements and resignations, including Representatives Jon Runyan of New Jersey, Tom Latham of Iowa, Frank R. Wolf of Virginia and Tim Griffin of Arkansas, whose seats could now be in play. In all, 12 House Republicans have announced that they are stepping down, either immediately or at the end of the year.”
• National Journal: “Add one more name to the ever-growing list of moderate House GOP retirements. […]His decision marks the fourth time this cycle that a moderate House Republican has unexpectedly announced his retirement, a development sure to reinforce perceptions that the House GOP's centrist wing is in steep decline.”
• Wall Street Journal: “Mr. Gerlach is the latest centrist lawmaker to announce retirement plans. Reps. Tom Latham (R., Iowa) and Frank Wolf (R., Va.)—also center-leaning legislators—announced they would not seek re-election last month after 10 and 17 terms, respectively.”
