Canadians might not be too happy with the United States these days, what with all that talk of a trade war, but a helpful crowd in Edmonton still belted out a rousing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Sunday after a mic died during the playing of the national anthems before an NHL playoff game.
Now that’s a class act, eh?
Canadian country music star Brett Kissel was tasked with singing the anthems prior to the start of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup playoffs between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks on Sunday afternoon. But when the microphone failed, Kissel urged the crowd to sing along to honor their southern neighbors.
And before you ask, no, they were not prompted along by lyrics on the big screen — those Canadians know the anthem by heart, impressively enough. (Pop quiz for our American readers: How many of you could sing the Canadian national anthem right now, unprompted? Hint: It starts off “O Canada...”)
For the record, the crowd sang the Canadian national anthem as well.
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for U.S.-Canadian relations. Last week, President Donald Trump was apparently ready to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement, before relenting and agreeing to renegotiations with Canada and Mexico. Last week the U.S. also said it would slap 20% tariffs against Canadian softwood lumber imports, and recently Trump stepped up criticism of Canada’s import tax on American milk.
