Immigration, Vets Behind Sabato Jr.'s Decision to Run for Congress

Antonio Sabato Jr. said "America First" principles — immigration and care for our veterans — were the driving forces behind his decision to run for Congress in California as a Republican, the famed actor told Newsmax TV.


Sabato, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and his bedrock American platform, is taking on incumbent Rep. Julia Brownley in the 2018 midterms.


"I am for a border wall. We need to protect our country no matter what," Sabato told "America Talks Live" host John Bachman on Monday. "Our country should be first, and we finally have a president who says certain things that might be too harsh to take but at the end of the day, you know we have a lot of people who are coming here illegally.



"At what point do you actually close the border and make it something where it's harder to get in here, not easier?" the "General Hospital" and "Melrose Place" actor said.


Veterans and the middle class come first for Sabato, who announced his candidacy in May.


"The veterans are a big issue. I think veterans should be first in line to be treated and they're not," Sabato said. "We're not doing enough for our veterans who are risking their lives, who have risked so much.



"The middle class who are the backbone of this country, they're suffering everywhere and especially in California where we want business to stay," Sabato said. "We want businesses to come to California and give back to the state but it's extremely hard and the liberal Democrats are making it harder for anyone to move to California. I don't want that."



When asked by Bachman if he supported a pathway to citizenship, Sabato said, "I really don't."


But without calling them out by name, Sabato seemed to express support for Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals recipients.


"People that have been here and they pay their taxes and they've been here a long time, they should be American citizens, and they love this country," Sabato said.


Sabato hopped on the Trump wagon from the jump, he told Bachman.
"I supported our president from Day 1 because I knew he was the guy for the job," Sabato said. "I just had enough with being lied to by a government for such a long time. We need people in government like myself who are actually going to work for the American people. It's simple as that.



"We need to help American people go to work and feel happy again that they're in the right country. And so that's why I'm in. I'm in it for the American people from Day 1," Sabato said.



Sabato emigrated from Italy to California in 1985, subsequently becoming a U.S. citizen in 1996.
