Sen. Rand Paul suffered minor injuries when a man allegedly assaulted him at his home in Warren County, Kentucky, on Friday afternoon, according to state authorities.

Kentucky State Police say 59-year-old Rene Boucher has been charged with fourth-degree assault and booked into Warren County Detention Center, after he "intentionally" assaulted Paul, "causing a minor injury."

"On Friday, November 3, 2017 at 3:21 p.m., KSP Troopers responded to the residence of Rand Paul in Warren County, in reference to a report of an assault," Kentucky State Police said in a news release. "Upon their arrival, it was determined that Rene Boucher had intentionally assaulted Paul causing a minor injury."

It's unclear what, if any, connection the suspect has to Paul. It's also unclear where exactly the assault took place — inside or outside the home.

A spokesperson for Paul said he is "fine," and was "blindsided" by the assault.

"Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault. The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police.

Senator Paul is fine," Kelsey Cooper, a spokesperson for Paul, told media outlets.

Local authorities are conducting an investigation. A court date has not yet been set for Boucher, according to booking records.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Sen. Rand Paul assaulted at Kentucky home, reportedly by neighbor

    Fox News

Sen. Rand Paul was assaulted at his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky by an irate neighbor while he was mowing his lawn on Friday afternoon, according to neighbors.

Kentucky State Police have arrested the senator’s assailant, identified as Rene Boucher, 59, of Bowling Green for intentionally assaulting Paul at his home, causing minor injury, local law-enforcement officials confirmed to Fox News.

Boucher was arrested and charged with one count of 4th degree assault – minor injury. He was taken to the nearby Warren County Detention Center where he is being held on $5,000 bail.

A second neighbor told local news station WNKY said that the Senator was mowing his lawn around 3 p.m. on Friday when Boucher assaulted him. The neighbor also confirmed that the two share a corner adjacent to their homes and have been embroiled in an ongoing feud.

The assailant could face up to a year in jail for the Class A misdemeanor. Local newspaper, The Bowling Green Daily News reports that Warren County Attorney Amy Milliken said Boucher could face extra charges.

Officials for Sen. Paul’s office say that the former presidential candidate did not suffer any major injuries.

"Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault," Kelsey Cooper, a spokeswoman for Paul, said in a statement to thehill.com.

"The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police. Senator Paul is fine.”

Voting records from the Kentucky State Board of Election list Boucher as a registered democrat, according to The Daily Caller.

A person with his name also works as an anesthesiologist in Bowling Green.

The Daily News also reported that Boucher was awarded a 2003 patent for a pain relief product called Therm-a-vest, which was sold on QVC in 2005, according to a news report at the time.

A Facebook account that is alleged to be maintained by Boucher was found to contain multiple anti-Trump postings.

(Reuters) - U.S. Senator Rand Paul's return to Washington may be delayed after he suffered five broken ribs during an assault at his Kentucky home, media reported on Sunday, citing a senior adviser to the Republican lawmaker.

Paul's neighbor, Rene Boucher, has been charged with one count of fourth-degree assault causing minor injury in connection with the incident on Friday, according to authorities. Boucher, 59, was released on bond.

"Senator Paul has five rib fractures including three displaced fractures. This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force," Doug Stafford, a senior adviser to Paul, said in a statement, according to multiple media reports.

"It is not clear exactly how soon he will return to work, as the pain is considerable as is the difficulty in getting around, including flying," the reports quoted Stafford as saying. He added that the senator's type of injury could lead to life-threatening injuries.

Paul, 54, also has lung contusions, Stafford said in the statement, according to the reports.

The Bowling Green Daily News, citing an arrest warrant, said Paul told police his neighbor came on to his property in a gated community just east of Bowling Green and tackled him from behind. Paul had injuries to the face and trouble breathing because of a rib injury, the newspaper said.

It was not clear what motivated the altercation and Paul did not go to the hospital, police said. Paul was mowing his lawn at the time of the attack, television station WAVE-TV in Kentucky reported.

"Kelley and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday's unfortunate event. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers," Paul said on Twitter on Sunday morning, referring to his wife.

A man who answered Boucher's phone on Sunday, when a Reuters reporter asked to speak with him, said: "I'm sorry. I can't talk."

Kentucky State Police said on Saturday that Paul and Boucher were acquaintances. The suspect is a retired physician, the Bowling Green Daily News said.

The New York Daily News reported that a Facebook page for Boucher contained numerous postings critical of Republican President Donald Trump.

Paul, an ophthalmologist, ran for the Republican presidential nomination before dropping out of the race in February 2016.
