What is the best use of the National Guard on the border?

For some time now I have been opposed to the deployment of Military (Active,... Reserve or Guard) on the border. The current situation has caused me to rethink this position. Following are the missions which I believe could be assigned to the Guard:

1) The medical system for screening and treating illegals. A National Guard medical unit could take over this function. A number of these units have trained in Central America and are well versed in the health issues which the illegals pose to the US.

2) A Military Police detention unit could take over and operate the Border Patrol detention facilities. This would allow those agents currently running the facilities to be released for patrol operations.

3) NG could be used to transport detainees to detention and intake facilities. This would allow the Border Patrol to stay on station and catch more illegals. Currently, the Border Patrol officers must leave their assigned stations to transport the illegals. This leaves their sector open for the illegals to cross unimpeded.

4) Reconnaissance elements from the NG could be assigned to conduct observation missions to locate illegals and direct Agents to intercept illegals who enter the US.

5) In areas were Agents have been fired upon, NG Scout Sniper teams could be deployed to provide counter sniper operations. They could locate Mexican snipers and render them ineffective should the Mexicans endanger our personnel.

6) Deploy electronic Intelligence teams. These teams would identify and locate the watchers on the US side of the border. The watchers report the location of Border security assets and direct the smugglers around the US security assets. They can also direct NG recon units to their locations for capture and interrogation.

These six missions would greatly enhance our border security and reduce the public health threat posed by the illegals. Just sending a bunch of National Guard troops to the border without a clear mission, arms and rules of engagement which allow them to react with deadly force will serve no purpose.
