WH: 'Screening Procedures In Place At Our Border'

White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters today that, after the Ebola case in Dallas, the Obama administration reminded border law enforcment agencies of "protocol" to deal with people that appear to have symptoms of Ebola. Earnest also said that there "are screening procedures in place at our border."

"[I]n light of this incident," Earnest said at his daily briefing, "the administration has taken the step of recirculating our guidance to law enforcement agencies that are responsible for securing the border, to those agencies that represent individuals who staff the airline industry, and to medical professionals all across the country to make sure that people are aware that there is an important protocol that should be implemented if an individual presents with symptoms that are consistent with Ebola."
The statement came up in addressing the Dallas case, as the person infected there reportedly had been traveling in Africa.
"[I]t’s my understanding that the individual in Dallas who has been hospitalized with Ebola is somebody who did recently travel to the United States from West Africa," Earnest said.

"Again, according to those medical professionals, this individual was not displaying any symptoms, was not experiencing any symptoms while he was traveling. That means there is no risk to the individuals who were traveling with that person.

"So there are protocols in place where those individuals who are leaving West Africa and traveling to the West are screened. While we’ve also provided guidance to pilots, flight attendants and others who make up the -- who are sort of responsible for staffing our transportation infrastructure, we’ve given them guidance for monitoring the health and wellbeing of travelers to ensure that if they notice individuals who are exhibiting symptoms that seem to be consistent with Ebola, that the proper authorities are notified.

"There also are screening procedures in place at our border. So as individuals enter the country, they are observed by Customs and Border Patrol and others to protect the broader American public. So there’s nothing about this case that we know so far that would indicate any weakness or any flaws in that system right now."

Doctor dons Ebola protection suit to protest CDC

Two days after a man in Texas was diagnosed with Ebola, a Missouri doctor Thursday morning showed up at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport dressed in protective gear to protest what he called mismanagement of the crisis by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Gil Mobley checked in and cleared airport security wearing a mask, goggles, gloves, boots and a hooded white jumpsuit emblazoned on the back with the words, “CDC is lying!”

“If they’re not lying, they are grossly incompetent,” said Mobley, a microbiologist and emergency trauma physician from Springfield, Mo.

Mobley said the CDC is “sugar-coating” the risk of the virus spreading in the United States.

Watch the CDC discuss the Ebola case here.

“For them to say last week that the likelihood of importing an Ebola case was extremely small was a real bad call,” he said.

“Once this disease consumes every third world country, as surely it will, because they lack the same basic infrastructure as Sierra Leone and Liberia, at that point, we will be importing clusters of Ebola on a daily basis,” Mobley predicted. “That will overwhelm any advanced country’s ability to contain the clusters in isolation and quarantine. That spells bad news.”

Mobley, a Medical College of Georgia graduate who had an overnight layover after flying to Atlanta from Guatemala on Wednesday, said that he feels that the CDC is “asleep at the wheel” when it comes to screening passengers arriving in the United States from other countries.

“Yesterday, I came through international customs at the Atlanta airport,” the doctor told The AtlantaJournal-Constitution. “The only question they asked arriving passengers is if they had tobacco or alcohol.”

The CDC on Wednesday sent a team to the airport in Monrovia, Liberia, where the Texas patient began his recent trip from Liberia to the United States, to make sure health officials there are screening passengers properly.

“There were no signs of any disease when the gentleman boarded the flight,” said Dr. Tom Kenyon, director of the CDC’s Center for Global Health. “This was not a failure of the screening process at the airport.”

Also Wednesday, customs workers at Hartsfield started handing out Ebola information leaflets to passengers holding passports from West African countries such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Information on Ebola is also displayed on posters and TV monitors in the customs area.

The person or persons that wrote this should be put on immediate trial for treason and if convicted face the penalty?

No indication of weakness in that system? How about all nonessential travel from nations experiencing the ebola pandemic outbreak should have been stopped weeks ago! How about someone should have been testing anyone arriving from pandemic areas for fever and symptoms at the gate!?!?!

To my knowledge our Federal government has taken zero steps to protect us here at home from pandemic ebola and many other diseases other than to send 3,000 of our troops into harms way where they are now likely to bring diseases home from their deployment in Africa!

And the 'system' as it stands is currently letting thousands of illegal aliens cross our borders each night so don't tell us that your 'system' doesnt have any problems right now you lying treasonous facilitators!

It is sick beyond words that politicians would put our entire nation at risk for a major deadly plague for their petty political schemes.

Patriots this happens BECAUSE WE LET IT HAPPEN. WHERE ARE THE MASS PROTESTS?WHERE ARE THE MOTHERS AND FATHERS IN FRONT OF OUR SCHOOLS TELLING THEM NO GOD DAMN DISEASED CHILDREN JEOPARDIZING THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH US?

We can stop this. Yes we can. But we are a bunch of gutless sissies who will not even stand up when it becomes a matter of a horrific plague and survival itself.

I am ashamed to be a conservative; I am ashamed to be an American. I am ashamed of the gutless acceptance of the federal imposed death of a nation and an entire population.

There have been protests at towns where the federal government tried to dump large numbers of "refugees" from Central America, but it does seem that Obama is still getting a pass. People just aren't ready to put the blame for this mess where it belongs.

Obama’s Plan for Keeping Ebola Out of the U.S.: Monitoring by Flight Attendants and B

Obama’s Plan for Keeping Ebola Out of the U.S.: Monitoring by Flight Attendants and Border Officials

    The Blaze

The Obama administration on Wednesday announced that it has asked flight attendants, pilots and border officials to monitor people’s health in an effort to stop others from entering the United States with the Ebola virus, even as some members of Congress are calling for a full travel ban from West African countries.

White House Spokesman Josh Earnest seemed to dismiss the idea that Ebola could spread throughout the U.S., and made no mention of a travel ban in his Wednesday briefing. Instead, he stressed that Ebola can only be transmitted through an exchange of bodily fluids from people showing symptoms of the disease, and said there are several steps being taken to watch for people exhibiting these symptoms.

“There are protocols in place where those individuals who are leaving West Africa and traveling to the West are screened,” he said. “We’ve also provided guidance to pilots, flight attendants and others who… are sort of responsible for staffing our transportation infrastructure, we’ve given them guidance for monitoring the health and well-being of travelers, to ensure that if they notice individuals who are exhibiting symptoms that seem to be consistent with Ebola, that the proper authorities are notified.”

He also said U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are watching for people with symptoms as they cross the border.

But by Earnests’s own logic, flight attendants, border officials and others are unlikely to spot anyone carrying the virus if they are not exhibiting symptoms. That makes it possible that more infected people could enter the country in addition to Thomas Duncan in Dallas, an Ebola victim who has created a health emergency that has forced health officials to scramble to ensure the virus does not spread further.

While Duncan entered the country without showing symptoms, he quickly developed them, and health officials are now monitoring dozens of people he contacted to see if they develop symptoms as well. It has also been reported that Duncan was “throwing up all over the place” outside his apartment complex, which could lead to further infections and has led some parents to pull their kids out of school.

Duncan’s case has also revealed flaws in the hospital system that could help the spread of the virus in the United States — the hospital he first visited released Duncan even though some knew he had been in West Africa. Health officials were also monitoring a second patient in Hawaii, who may also have the virus.

The idea that a travel ban would not keep the disease from spreading appears to be based partly on comments from Centers for Disease Control Director Tom Frieden, who said this week there was “zero risk of transmission” on the flight.

But Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) on Wednesday wrote a letter to Frieden asking him to recommend a travel ban to the Obama administration, and said the government has the power to impose a travel ban for health-related reasons.

“Fortunately, there is a law already on the books with the very purpose of containing the spread of diseases into our country,” Poe said. “The time to invoke this law to ensure Americans are not exposed to this deadly disease is now, not after the disease is spread even further within our borders.”

The law Poe cited allows the Surgeon General to recommend a travel ban when there is a “serious danger of the introduction” of a communicable disease into the United States.

As of this week, however, a travel ban doesn’t seem to be in the cards. A State Department official told the Washington Post that there are no plans to impose a travel ban.
