What happened to 'TEMPORARY WORK PERMITS'?

Someone please explain to me WHY any illegal alien who has sneaked into this country to 'supposedly' work should EVER be able to STAY after his/her work is completed and also WHY they have to bring any member of their family at all. What ever happened to TEMPORARY WORK PERMITS.....YOU WORK AND YOU GO BACK HOME!!!! American citizens have particular jobs that require them to LEAVE THEIR FAMILIES FOR A PERIOD OF TIME TO 'WORK'.....once the work is completed, they return HOME. Our men/women in the military live this way. Men to work on oil rigs in the middle of the ocean live this way for years...they work six months out in the field and they are home six months. They don't drag along their families. And where does our constitution say that we're obligated to care for ILLEGAL ALIEN'S AND THEIR FAMILIES, PERIOD? How did these 'invaders' become 'the rule' rather than the 'exception to the rule'? This country is going through some tough times right now and it's time to TELL ALL NON-CITIZENS that the 'free ride' is over. Charity begins at home. It is absolutely disgusting to see how we've allowed this situation get so out of control. [/b]

That's the problem, about half overstay and become illegal aliens.

Also, DC doesn't seem to realize we already have a guestworker program that doesn't work.

The problem is our government. Every country I have been to ( except Mexico) you go through immigration and customs upon entering the country. When you leave, you also go through immigration and customs. The have an accurate picture or who come in, how long they stay, and when they leave. That way, anyone who overstays their 90 visit is immediately red flagged and can be searched for.

Here in the US, you come with a visa and go through immigrations and customs but no one knows when you leave because we have no exit procedure. So all our government does is stick its head in the sand and just assume visitors left. Quite a few do not. I have know of MANY Iranian students that came here in the 70's on a student visa who never left. My wife has met many from her former country that have come here on visitors visas and never left. No one knows they are here because it is assumed they left after 90 days.

What a governmental permitted invasion on the American Workplaces? Why compete globally? We have to compete globally with illegals in our interior. Is this FAIR to our citizens not having a Citizens FIRST in the workplace?

You're right. That is one of the issues that was debated during the last amnesty attempt. To my knowledge we still do not have an adquate procedure in place to ensure that visitors leave when they are supposed to. However, I do believe H1B and H2B workers who don't fulfill their contract (vanish into the general population) are reported to the federal government.

That would be a good job for the US Marshalls IF anyone had a clue who was over staying their visa and who was leaving.

So we have no exit status at all of immigrants. This is a total mess! What are we paying the US Marshalls to do?

Marni, you've identified the problem exactly; most of the illegal aliens here working have a dependent spouse/girlfriend here with them. Then most of them have anchor babies once they arrive, start collecting the free flowing benefits, start their "American citizen" children in the U.S. schools and never intend to leave. There is no such thing as a "guestworker" as far as these people are concerned.
