DENVER, Colo. – A seemingly new airport security measure is leaving some passengers surprised and upset. Passengers in Colorado say they’ve been asked to hand over drinks they buy inside the airport terminal for additional testing.

KJCT-8 News in Grand Junction, CO reports that TSA agents are asking airport patrons to open up their drinks so that they conduct a second round of screenings at their flight gates.

But the TSA insists this isn’t a new far-reaching screening effort.

“In a nutshell, liquid screening at gates is random and it isn’t happening at every airport every day,” TSA employee Bob Burns wrote on the administration’s official blog on July 5. “So other than possibly taking a few moments of your time before boarding your flight, it’s business as usual”

According to Burns,some passengers are testing small samples of passengers drinks before they get on the plane. Here’s how he described the test:
“In case you’re wondering, our officers don’t place the test strips in your beverages/liquids. They simply have the passenger remove the cap/lid and they hold the strip over the opening of the container.

Procedures call for moving the test strip to the side and applying the solution from the dropper to test the strip. If the test results are positive TSA will conduct additional testing to make a final assessment.”

Some travelers aren’t buying the TSA’s explanation, saying they think the protocol is overkill.

“Well, you know, I’m always glad that my safety’s a priority. I think testing drinks after they’ve already been bought might be a little extreme,” said Jennifer Smart, an infrequent traveler.

“The water or the juices or anything you buy here in the airport, the TSA’s going to come over and look and check and test it? I mean, it’s just ridiculous,” added experienced flyer Thomas Burgard.

TSA explains additional liquid screening in airport gate areas

The TSA responded on July 5 to criticism of its random additional screening of drinks bought by passengers after they’ve passed through security checkpoints.

News reports of passengers who have had drinks they have purchased in secure gate areas screened by TSA agents prompted the agency to explain the procedures. In a blog post, TSA spokesman “Blogger Bob” Burns said the practice is not redundant, but part of the agency’s tactics to inject some unpredictability into the layers of security already in place.

Passengers complained in a July 3, KJCT, Grand Junction, CO report that drinks they purchased in gate areas behind security checkpoints were being screened by TSA. The passengers said that made them think the drinks weren’t safe. They also said the TSA agents wouldn’t say what they were testing for and passengers had a right to know.

Burns responded that the agency likes to stay away from static security procedures and inject some unpredictability into the process.

However, the drinks sold in gate areas have presumably already been screened, which prompted the complaints. “So, the most popular question that comes up with this topic is: ‘Isn't this redundant?’” asked Burns. “On the surface, it does seem that way, and it's the first logical thought that many have. However, any security expert will tell you that nothing is ever 100 percent secure. So, gate screening is kind of like our safety net to keep up with anybody who might be trying to get things past conventional screening,” he said.

The added that “unpredictable measure(s)” are necessary to make it more difficult for possible attackers. “If everything we did was always the same, it would provide a checklist for people to know exactly what to expect. While this would be extremely helpful for passengers, it would also be useful to those wishing to do us harm,” he said.

Liquids testing at the gate, he added, is one of a variety of tactical options the agency has, noting that it started using test strips in 2007 for liquids and continues to do so. “The test involves a test strip and a dropper containing a nontoxic solution,” he said, adding that the strips aren’t dipped into passengers’ drinks, but held over the beverage after any caps or lids are removed. The strip is moved from side to side and then the solution is applied with a dropped to the strip for the test. If the test results are positive TSA will conduct additional testing to make a final assessment, he said.
