(CNSNews.com) – House Speaker John Boehner will not be attending a weekend retreat hosted by The Republican Mainstreet Partnership PAC -- whose goal is to elect moderate GOP candidates and protect Republican incumbents from Tea Party challengers -- because of a scheduling conflict, a GOP aide told CNSNews.com.But Boehner's top two lieutenants, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), are listed as speakers on the agenda for the April 11-13th event, which will be held at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, Fla.
CNSNews.com’s repeated calls and emails to Cantor and McCarthy to confirm their attendance at the weekend getaway were not returned.
An aide to Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.) said that he will be attending the gathering, but there was no response from Republican Congressmen Fred Upton (R-Mich.) or Leonard Lance (R-N.J.), who are also listed as participants at the PAC event.
Although no details or topics of discussion were listed on the agenda beyond “Welcome,” Break-Out Sessions,” “Political Overview,” “Ways and Means Overview,” and “Game Night,” an emailed invitation obtained by CNSNews.com stated that the goal of the gathering is to “bolster our incumbents who are under attack from the far right, and ensure that we hold on to seats represented by pragmatic Republicans that we would otherwise loose [sic] if there was an ultra-conservative in the general runoff.”
The invitation added that “people that are attending have donated $5,000 to the PAC.”
Former Ohio congressman Steve LaTourette is a member of the PAC’s board, which “supports Republican candidates who are fiscally conservative and take a pragmatic, common-sense approach to social issues.”

Last November, LaTourette, who is also president of an affiliated group called Main Street Advocacy, blamed the Tea Party and conservative groups that supported it for “waging a vicious intra-party civil war that has cost the Republican Party control of the U.S. Senate.”
LaTourette added that the group’s anti-Tea Party digital ad campaign was just the “opening salvo” in an $8 million effort to “fight back” against “the far right’s attempts to purge the GOP of people they find to be ‘imperfect’.”
LaTourette also heads The Main Street Partnership, which has donated $2.1 million to candidates since 2000, according to Open Secrets.
Main Street Partnership’s website says it is “aligned with the governing wing of the Republican Party and centrist policymakers.” Members include “moderate” Republican Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Mark Kirk (R-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ).
LaTourette, who is also president of lobbying firm McDonald Hopkins Government Strategies and a “close friend” of Boehner, recently taunted the Club for Growth for targeting Main Street Partnership member Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) for a primary challenge because of his voting record on key conservative issues, including the Ryan-Murray budget deal.
According to Open Secrets, LaTourette’s group spent $20,000 this year to support Kinzinger against Tea Party challenger David Hale.
“The Club for Growth launched a ‘Primary My Congressman’ campaign that was aimed at 10 Republican members of Congress that have had the audacity to govern on behalf of their constituents rather than at the behest of the New York and DC millionaire special interests at the Club for Growth,” LaTourette said in a March 19 press release.
“So far the Club is a perfect 0 for 2, and losing is something the Club for Growth should get used to – last night’s losses are just the beginning.”
But Club for Growth spokesman Barney Keller told CNSNews.com that his group did not make any endorsements in the Kinzinger-Hale contest. “How can we lose primary races we weren’t involved in?” he asked.
Main Street Advocacy also spent $18,303 to defeat Michigan Tea Party candidate Jack Hoogendyk, who unsuccessfully ran against Upton in the Republican House primary during the 2011-2012 election cycle, according to Open Secrets.

Tea Party write-in candidate wins state senate seat

Tea Party candidate Scott Wagner won a seat in the Pennsylvania Senate with a write-in campaign against Republican Ron Miller and Democrat Linda Small, according to the Washington Examiner.

York is a modest little city in Southern Pennsylvania not too far from Baltimore and right in the heart of Dutch country. It’s not the sort of place where political revolutions are found.

But Republican state Senate nominee Ron Miller may think differently this morning because he just lost a special election to a write-in Tea Party candidate, Scott Wagner.

“With 100 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, write-in votes totaled 10,595, or 47.7 percent, to Miller’s 5,920, or 26.6 percent. Democrat Linda Small of New Freedom nearly edged out Miller with 5,704 votes, for 25.7 percent,” according to the York Dispatch.

GOP Establishment Defeated by Tea Party Write-in Candidate

March 19, 2014 By Matthew Burke

Tea Party candidate Scott Wagner wasn’t on the ballot in an election for the state Senate in Pennsylvania, but it didn’t matter. He won anyway, and it wasn’t even close.

GOP establishment-backed candidate, Republican Pennsylvania State Representative Ron Miller, who was on the ballot, received 26.64% of the vote. The Democrat candidate, Linda Small, received 25.67%, but Tea Party grassroots candidate Wagner received 47.68% of the vote as a write-in candidate, almost double that of Miller.

In a statement, the victorious Scott Wagner, a small business owner, lifelong York County, PA, resident, and first time candidate, said that he’d made history:
“Our victory is a result of the hard-work of many people throughout York County participating in our campaign along with our campaign team. I want to thank all of you.
Tonight demonstrates the people of York County are committed to doing what is right for our community and the state of Pennsylvania.
Again, thanks to everyone for all that you have done to make history tonight.”

Young Voters Are Up For Grabs, The GOP Doesn’t Seem To Want Them

March 26, 2014 by Sam Rolley

“Are younger voters up for grabs?” asks The Wall Street Journal in a recent piece about the millennial generation’s growing disillusionment with government.
The answer, provided by a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, is “yes,” but where they’ll turn is unclear.
    Via WSJ:
It would be a stretch to say millennials are warming to the GOP. Just a quarter of those under 35 said they had positive feelings toward the Republican Party in the last Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, which came out two weeks ago.
At the same time, millennials aren’t exactly in love with the Democratic Party. Soon after Mr. Obama took office in 2009, nearly half looked favorably on the Democrats. That number has since slipped to 36%.
Younger voters have also soured on Mr. Obama. In the most recent Journal poll, just over half disapproved both of his presidency and his handling of the economy, up sharply from the 38% who disapproved of his job performance two years ago.
The good news is that America’s youth population is slowly realizing that government is more often a problem than a solution, and that promises of hope and change (close Gitmo, end wars, create new jobs for graduates) most always amount to a steaming pile of bullshit.
The bad news is that Democrats traditionally enjoy strong youth support, and, as we’ve recently witnessed with the introduction of the GOP hipster, the GOP just isn’t that good at attracting young voters. Furthermore, Hillary Clinton, who will almost certainly be the Democratic pick if she runs, has already started courting the youth vote.
Thanks to the Republican establishment, there’s more bad news for conservative voters who believe the youth vote could drive a right-of-center candidate to Presidential victory in 2016.
While Clinton has her party’s support in trying to sway young Americans, the GOP has already begun working to marginalize potential youth-friendly candidates like Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.).
Paul’s anti-surveillance and individual liberty message, widely popular among young Americans, has been derided by more than a few of his Republican colleagues. And the GOP mainstream’s refusal to move away from moral pandering and hawkish foreign policy has led to establishment attacks on the very libertarian-leaning ideals behind Paul’s youth appeal.
Republicans have found themselves at this crossroads before: Truly embrace small government, personal-liberty policies; or help another Democrat into the Oval Office. And based on the party’s past, if the 2016 election ends up hinging on the youth vote, prepare yourself once again to utter the words “President Clinton.”
