    President Trump’s inner circle is mulling CIA Director Mike Pompeo as a replacement for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Axios reported Friday.

    Pompeo, 53, enjoys a good relationship with the President and personally brings Trump his daily intelligence briefings, sources told the politics website.

    He would likely move into the position without causing too much of a stir in a White House that’s already seen major staff changes, Axios noted.

    The news comes amid reports that Trump and Tillerson are at odds, especially after NBC News reported the top diplomat called the President a “moron” during a Pentagon meeting.

    Rex Tillerson called up to White House amid growing tensions

    Tillerson doubled down on his support of the President in a statement Wednesday, but didn’t immediately deny referring to Trump as a moron. A State Department representative later said it didn’t happen.

    But the commander-in-chief fumed that the former ExxonMobil CEO didn’t flatly deny the story no matter what, according to Axios.

    White House Chief of Staff John Kelly invited Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to the White House after the NBC News story ran to discuss steps forward.

    Tillerson reportedly has a tense relationship with the President, which has gotten worse in recent weeks.

    Kelly, a retired Marine general, has been trying to avoid another cabinet shake-up, Axios reported, especially after Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s departure last Friday.

    Tillerson: Never wanted to quit, won't deny calling Trump 'moron'

    But sources told Axios the CIA chief could make a smooth transition into the role.

    Foreign leaders would likely view him as a credible member of Trump’s team, which Axios said they haven’t seen with Tillerson, who didn’t work in politics before taking over in January.

    Pompeo, a three-term congressman from Kansas, also already advises Trump on immigration and navigating Capitol Hill, according to the website.

    Axios didn’t indicate whether the State Department change was imminent. Tillerson, speaking Wednesday, reaffirmed he doesn’t plan to quit, but noted he serves at the President’s pleasure.

    Mike Pompeo on Immigration
    Secure our borders; stop rewarding lawbreakers

    The federal government is failing at keeping our borders safe. There's no doubt in my mind that we need to increase the security along the U.S. border with Mexico.We have a process in place to allow those who wish to enter America legally. Using that process, millions of legal immigrants have done the right thing and become a legal U.S. citizen. Lawbreakers should never be rewarded for breaking the law, and I oppose any form of amnesty.

    Stop releasing low-risk illegal immigrants.

    Pompeo signed Letter to DHS on illegal immigrant release
    Letter from office of Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ-5) signed by 37 Members of Congress
    Dear Secretary Napolitano,
    We are deeply concerned that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is using sequestration as a vehicle to further the Administration's disregard for enforcing our immigration laws. Specifically, we are troubled by recent reports that DHS has released hundreds of illegal immigrants, rather than finding cost savings elsewhere in the agency.

    Your agency's decision to release "low-risk" illegal immigrants back into the public under the guise of saving money is unprecedented and dangerous. The inability of DHS to prioritize resources for potential cuts suggests this decision was either politically motivated to further the Administration's amnesty goals or, at best, demonstrates agency incompetence.

    Given the public safety and national security concerns this decision raises, we respectfully request you halt any further action to release detained illegal immigrants. Also, please respond to the following questions, regarding individuals already released, pending release, or anticipated to be released:

    • The number of detainees released and the geographic location of where the releases took place;
    • Any plans for future releases, and the geographic location of where those releases will take place;
    • The name of the DHS official who authorized the review of detained illegal immigrants for release;
    • The criteria used to determine who is eligible for release;
    • The number of reviewed detainees denied release and the specific reasons for such denials;
    • A list identifying cuts to the DHS budget implemented prior to the release of the detainees, the budget savings achieved, and why these savings were insufficient;
    • How DHS is tracking illegal immigrants released under this plan, and whether they will be ordered back to detention centers if funding becomes available.
