5.5 MILLION VETS GET BEHIND NEWEST RALLY

Coalition blames Washington for targeting military members, families, survivors

Veterans have rallied against the federal government’s actions in Washington several times lately, including over the weekend when they carried barricades – some called them “barrycades” – over to the White House lawn where they dumped them.

    So have bikers.

    So have truckers.

But now, according to a report in the Army Times, a group representing about 5.5 million Americans – service members, veterans, retirees and their families – will be rallying on Tuesday.

It will happen, again, at the World War II Memorial, where members of Congress in recent days have helped take down barricades erected by the National Park Service to keep military veterans away from the open-air memorial that is in their honor.

The Army Times report said the rally will be “aimed at embarrassing Congress and the White House into action.”

It cites plans by the Military Coalition, which includes 33 different military and veterans organizations, to have a rally and news conference to call on Congress and the White House to make the decisions needed to get the government going.

Parts of the federal government have been shut down since the first of the month because of a disagreement over the funding for the operations. President Obama has refused to negotiate over several compromises proposed by House Republicans.

And now the looming debt ceiling deadline is approaching this week.

“The shutdown has been devastating for the nation’s military readiness and for the veterans, service members, families and survivors in the uniformed services community,” the coalition said the the Times report.

“Veterans who receive disability and GI Bill benefits and survivors who rely on survivor benefits don’t know if they’ll get their next check,” the statement said. “National Guard and reserve monthly training has been canceled, affecting critical troop readiness and pay. Many services that military families count on daily are suspended. Veterans make up 27 percent of the federal workforce and don’t know when they will get to go back to work. The 435,000 veterans in the VA disability claims backlog have to wait even longer.”

Among the groups sending representatives will be the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and the National Military Family Association.

The memorial in Washington was the scene of fireworks over the weekend, when thousands of Americans stormed into the nation’s capital and tore down barricades blocking the World War II Memorial Sunday.

“Barrycades are down,” tweeted Sherry Lucas, a reference to President Barack Obama’s childhood nickname of Barry.

Many of the barricades were then hand-carried by the protesters and dumped in front of the White House.

This weekend has seen the convergence of U.S. veterans and truckers on the nation’s capital, as many protest the closure of public memorials as well as the president’s policies.

Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, addressed the crowd at 9:30 a.m. and were later joined by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin, Mike Lee and Ted Cruz took part in the Million Vet March Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.

The Million Vet March website indicates, “The actions of the U.S. government this week with regard to barricading and shutting down the World War II Memorial to veterans, that may or may not be on their last trip to Washington D.C., is a despicable act of cowardice.

“Veterans this week were unwillingly pitted as pawns in this crisis. We feel that this should never be the case. This is why we will go to Congress after the budget crisis and ask for a bill to be introduced that would prevent any member of the government from closing our memorials down to any American, except for maintenance purposes.

“Many in our group have decided that enough is enough. We are Americans. We are proud of our heritage and our service. As all of us were military brats and spouses, we have served in some form or another our entire lives. This is our way of life. We will not stand by and let the U.S. government dishonor the legacy of sacrifice of the generations before us.”

Sunday’s crowd chanted, “Tear down these walls!” and belted out “God Bless America” and other patriotic songs.

Video shows riot police showing up with batons at a peaceful protest outside the White House:

According to WTOP-TV, “Tractor-trailers headed down 17th Street toward the Mall, blaring their horns. The Metropolitan Police Department blocked off the street, prompting the crowd to head up the street, shouting at the police to move their vehicles. …

“By 11 a.m., the group had headed back to the memorial, and dozens congregated around World War II veterans, shaking their hands and thanking them for their service.”

Comments from participants and readers are now being posted in many online forums, with remarks including:

    • “Wow, finally the ‘real’ Americans show up in D.C.! Reid and Obama: You can’t call on the SEALs because the SEALs are ALREADY there!”

    • “God bless our veterans! Too bad they didn’t drag President Mooslim out of his hiding place.”

    • “These are privately funded monuments, and they belong to the citizens of this country, especially to those who fought, died and came home torn inside out. Back off, demonic Democrats. You are picking on the wrong people, but we clearly see who’s side you are really on, and it is NOT on the side of Americans.”

Even as Washington leaders work to hammer out a deal to end the government shutdown, a group of military and veterans organization will rally in Washington tomorrow in efforts to highlight the impact the impasse is having on them.
The Military Coalition, a group of 33 military and veterans' organizations, will hold a rally and news conference at the National World War II Memorial tomorrow calling for an end to the shutdown. The news conference will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the rally.
"The shutdown has been devastating for the nation's military readiness and for the veterans, service members, families and survivors in the uniformed services community," the coalition said in a written statement.
The coalition said the impact of the Congressional failure to reach an appropriation deal is impacting full-time active duty troops, reserve components and veterans.
"Veterans who receive disability and GI Bill benefits and survivors who rely on survivor benefits don't know if they'll get their next check. National Guard and Reserve monthly training has been cancelled, affecting critical troop readiness and pay," the coalition said. "Many services that military families count on daily are suspended. Veterans make up 27 percent of the federal workforce and don't know when they will get to go back to work. The 435,000 veterans in the VA disability claims backlog have to wait even longer."
The rally will include speakers from the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Jewish War Veterans, the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Reserve Officers Association, the National Military Family Association, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
The rally comes just weeks after a group of veterans who had flown to Washington to visit the WWII memorial moved the barricades blocking off the area and continued their tour. On Oct. 13, veterans took barricades from the monument and left them in the front of the White House.

    Military Coalition Organizes Shutdown Rally

    October 14, 2013

The National World War II Memorial, the center of many protests since the partial government shutdown on Oct. 1, will be the backdrop of yet another rally on Tuesday aimed at embarrassing Congress and the White House into action.
The Military Coalition, a group of 33 military and veterans’ organizations sharing a common agenda, plans to hold a rally and news conference calling on Congress and the White House to reach a compromise on the government shutdown and national debt limit.
“The shutdown has been devastating for the nation’s military readiness and for the veterans, service members, families and survivors in the uniformed services community,” says a Coalition announcement.

The 435,000 veterans in the VA disability claims backlog have to wait even longer.”
The event will be less dramatic than the Oct. 1 shoving aside of barricades by World War II veterans who had flown to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorial dedicated to their service and the Oct. 13 rally that ended with the near-arrest of veterans who had carried barricades from the memorial to drop in front of the White House and tried to scale the iron fence surrounding the presidential compound.
However, the Coalition represents 5.5 million people, including current service members, retirees, veterans and their families.
Among the speakers will be representatives of the American Legion, which with 2.4 million members is the nation’s largest veterans group, along with Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and the National Military Family Association.

Military Coalition Rallies, Demands End to Govt. Shutdown

“Playing politics with veterans pay and benefits it not an option”

A group of military veterans representing more than 5.5 million members organized and rallied at the National WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. this morning demanding an end to the government shutdown.
The protest drew dozens of veterans whom, once again, peacefully removed barricades that were reinforced by the National Park Police yesterday, however, this time no reports surfaced of arrests or any confrontations with police.
Tuesday’s protest, organized by The Military Coalition (TMC), represented more than 33 organizations including: the Marine Corps League, Assoc. of the US Army, Assoc. of the US Navy, AMVETS, Reserve Officers Assoc. and many others.

Today’s rally aimed at voicing the financial crisis many vets face in the wake of the government shutdown. Congress must come to an agreement by Oct. 17 to avoid a default on top of the government shutdown, which would cancel out legislation crafted to protect vets from funding cuts.
If an agreement is not reached, veterans could face losing death benefits, incentive pays, re-enlistment bonuses, disability benefits and survivor benefits.
Today vets have received their paychecks, but it’s the next check they’re worried about.
“Playing politics with veterans pay and benefits it not an option,” said Ray Kelley of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America said, “Right now, veterans are hurting. They don’t know if their disability checks are coming. They don’t know if their GI Bill checks are coming.”
A Stimson Center analyst and professor at American University weighed in on the crisis and said, “[Under default], the first crunch will come when the Nov. 1 payroll is due.”
“The impact for anybody drawing pay [in the military] will grow increasingly severe. “People are probably not going to get paid for a while,” said Adams.
Over the weekend the government was anything but hesitant when it came to deploying expensive resources to confront, monitor and even arrest vets who were visiting their memorials in the National Mall.
Sunday, a plethora of reports cited National Park Police buzzing around the National Mall in helicopters, which reportedly cost $15,000/hour to stay airborne.
Meanwhile, a crucial Life Flight helicopter for St. John Medical Center in Longview, WA has been grounded due to the government shutdown.
In another example of frivolous, unnecessary spending, last week the National Park Police were ordered to conduct around-the-clock surveillance of the Grand Canyon National Park.
The government’s discretion as to how and where to expend financial resources clearly makes no sense, other than to punish undeserving Americans, including military veterans who have risked their lives in wars which they thought were meant to preserve America’s sovereignty.
Unfortunately, government corruption embedded with and fueled by globalist agendas and political dog and pony shows have steadily stripped those freedoms from Americans, creating a tyrannical government whose interests only serve themselves.
