• N.J. Democrat employed illegal immigrant sex offender

An immigration enforcement activist says it's appalling that one of the leading advocates for illegal immigration in the U.S. Senate had employed a registered sex offender, who was in the country illegally, as an unpaid intern in his Senate office.

    The Associated Press
learned that Senator Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) had employed 18-year-old Luis Abrahan Sanchez Zavaleta, a Peruvian national, who had entered the country on a now-expired visa. An official told AP that the Department of Homeland Security instructed federal agents to wait weeks and not to arrest Zavaleta until after Election Day. Sanchez was subsequently arrested at his home in New Jersey on December 6. A state prosecutor said that Sanchez was found to have violated the law in 2010 and was required to register as a sex offender. He now faces deportation.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), says this story could have had an adverse effect on Menendez' re-election if it had been made public prior to the election.

"Fifty-eight percent is a real strong win -- but not the type of win you get when you've got a convicted sex offender illegal immigrant on your staff," he notes. "I would say something that powerful could have brought Menendez down prior to the election. And the Obama administration, showing favoritism toward its friends, stopped the release of the information."

But Gheen says he is not so sure the Department of Homeland Security's delay in arresting the illegal alien would have hurt the president's re-election bid.

"I've seen a lot of things happen that I really felt would bring this anti-Christian administration down," he tells OneNewsNow. "And I have been exceptionally disappointed with the influence of the Fast and Furious scandal, 'Benghazi-gate,' amnesty decree. It's hard to say what level of atrocities the Obama administration may be able to engage in."

However, Gheen believes this scandal will have a negative effect on Menendez's efforts to get an amnesty bill passed next year.
