A 23-year-old Mexican citizen was arrested south of Blythe on suspicion of smuggling more than $100,000 worth of drugs, the U.S. Border Patrol reported Wednesday.
The man, described as a lawfully admitted permanent U.S. resident, was arrested Saturday at the Highway 78 checkpoint, said Agent Shaun Kuzia.
He pulled up to the checkpoint in a white 1995 Ford Mustang and a canine team alerted agents to the likely presence of narcotics or people hidden inside the car, Kuzia said.
Agents conducted a search and found 15 plastic-wrapped bundles of marijuana and two Tupperware containers of methamphetamine, according to Kuzia.
The 33 pounds of marijuana had a street value of more than $26,000, and the 2.5 pounds of meth was worth around $80,000, the agent said.
The man, whose name was withheld, was handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the car and drugs, Kuzia said.
