LONG BEACH, Calif.—Federal agents have seized 50 percent more imported shipments of counterfeit or pirated goods at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach this year compared to 2007.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Thursday it has seized 357 illegal shipments, worth more than $71 million.

Agents found illegally imported electrical products such as untested Christmas lights, food that had not been inspected for harmful ingredients and knockoff handbags and shoes.

Todd Hoffman, the federal agency's seaport director, says counterfeit products cost American businesses at least $200 billion annually. He says the products are also responsible for the loss of more than 750,000 American jobs.
