18 Indicted in Drug Smuggling Case

TUCSON - An indictment charges an Army National Guard soldier and 17 other people with participating in a cross-border smuggling ring — the first criminal case produced by a newly created border crime unit funded under a $94 million settlement paid by Western Union.

The indictment issued by a grand jury in Tucson and announced Wednesday alleges the group smuggled marijuana and cash through a border gate on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation in western Pima County.

Attorney General Terry Goddard says 23-year-old Pfc. Travis Ray Lopez of Sells allegedly used his status and uniform to smuggle drugs and cash through checkpoints.

There's no phone listing for Lopez in Sells, and Goddard's office says Lopez is considered a fugitive.

The defendants include both U.S. citizens and Mexican citizens, including some with resident alien status.

And in their news release, they only provide one name, Sgt Lopez.

The last I heard about this Lopez yesterday was that he was missing.
