A man and woman from Oceanside were arraigned on human-smuggling charges yesterday in federal court in San Diego.
According to court documents, Ricardo Roberto Gonzalez Camacena, 36, and Luisa Gonzalez Pizarro, 33, are accused of conspiracy to bring people into the United States illegally, in addition to transporting and harboring them.
The pair also are accused of money laundering and other illegal monetary transactions stemming from their alleged smuggling activities.
According to spokeswoman Deb Hartman of the U.S. Attorney's Office, both pleaded not guilty. A detention hearing is set for Thursday.
A third person charged in the case is Valerie Northcutt, who allegedly transported four undocumented individuals from Arizona to Escondido in February 2004 and received between $2,000 and $2,500 for each from their families and friends.
Northcutt, 28, of Yuma has been arraigned in Arizona, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Oceanside man and woman kept approximately $193,739 in cash in their home, according to court documents, plus $121,300 in cash in a shoebox secured by masking tape in the closet of a Carlsbad home.
