22 Carnival Cruise passengers robbed at gunpoint on ship-sponsored tour in Mexico

22 Carnival Cruise passengers robbed at gunpoint on ship-sponsored tour in Mexico

The incident comes at a rough time for the beleaguered Mexican Riviera cruise region, which has seen numerous lines pull out over safety and security concerns, as well as issues with demand. Lines have primarily cut calls in Mazatlan, which has seen its scheduled ship visits plummet from 200 in 2010 to roughly a dozen in 2012, but Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta have also suffered.

Twenty-two passengers on Carnival Splendor were robbed at gunpoint Thursday while on a ship-sponsored tour in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

At least one Mexican media outlet said the passengers were returning by bus to their ship at approximately 5 p.m. after spending time in El Nogalito, a tourist area known for its lush natural setting. Masked assailants stopped the bus and robbed the cruisers of their money, watches, cameras and other valuables.

There were no injuries and all passengers were returned safely to the ship, Carnival said in a statement. Numerous authorities were notified and responded to investigate, as well as assist the affected passengers, Carnival said.

According to informador.mx.com, the bandits have yet to be apprehended.

Carnival also apologized to the passengers for the "unfortunate and disturbing event" and said it is working with passengers to reimburse them for lost valuables and assist with lost passports or other forms of identification.

The tour in question — a guided nature trail excursion sold and booked through the line — has been suspended until further notice.

The U.S. State Department advises Americans to exercise caution when traveling to Mexico. Earlier this month, the department released its latest travel warning, updating one that had been in effect since April 2011. As with the earlier warning, it reiterated that millions of Americans safely visit the country every year and that most of the drug-related violence occurs near the Mexico-U.S. border and along drug-trafficking routes, rather than in resort towns and other tourist destinations.

The Carnival Splendor made headlines in November 2010 after an onboard fire paralyzed the ship for three days about 200 miles outside San Diego and stranded thousands of passengers. The repaired ship set sail again last February with two new generators and a new engine.
Carnival Splendor is currently sailing on a seven-day cruise that departed Long Beach, Calif., on Sunday.

Well, Mexico can say "adios" to Carnival Cruise Lines - especially if Carnival can no longer get passengers on their cruise ships for fear of exactly this or being killed exists.

Something like that occurring (God forbid) is not beyond reality. Cartels killed over 30 at a Mexican casino last year in one mass murder. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time in Mexico is much more likely of happening now than ever.

Travel warning: Violence spreading in Mexico

    By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 7:05 PM EST, Fri February 10, 2012

(CNN) -- Americans should avoid all but essential travel to all or parts of 14 Mexican states, the U.S. State Department warns as violence has spread.

Shootouts, kidnappings and carjackings have climbed, as have cartels, also known as transnational criminal organizations (TCO), the State Department said this week in a broadened travel warning.

While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico every year, the country's ongoing violence and security concerns pose risks for U.S. citizens, and travelers should take precautions, the State Department advises.

    Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point Information

    By Land
Driving is the most common method for visitors to Puerto Penasco.

From Arizona: Cross the border at Lukeville/Sonoyta border. Puerto Penasco is 63 miles south on Mexican Hwy. 8. The border is closed from midnight until 6am. There are also several shuttle companies between Phoenix/Tucson and Puerto Penasco (look under Activities & Tours).
From California: Take US Hwy. 8 east from San Diego or US Hwy. 10 east from Los Angeles area. You have the option of driving through to AZ Hwy. 85 (Gila Bend) and heading south to the Lukeville/Sonoyta border or crossing the border at either Algodones (across from California) or San Luis Rio Colorado (across from Arizona, soth of Yuma).

Highway between Sonoyta & Puerto Penasco
You can then drive Mexican Hwy. 2 east through the beautiful Desierto del Altar desert. Although you are on a highway, there are not alot of stores, etc. between San Luis and Sonoyta so make sure you are stocked up on supplies and water. The highway is frequently traveled so you will be able to flag someone down if your vehicle breaks down. This is also the northern entrance to the Pinacate Reserve.
    Driving Distances
    Phoenix.....215 miles
    Tucson.....216 miles
    Los Angeles.....516 miles
    San Diego.....360 miles

If you do drive your vehicle to Puerto Penasco, you must have Mexican auto insurance, it's the law.

Please look under the Travel & Lodging directory for a list of companies.

You don't need a car permit to drive to Puerto Penasco.

Ironic that the State Department warns against traveling in Mexico while the government allows the very same people that make Mexico dangerous to come into this country and bring their lawlessness with them.
