Illegal immigrant mothers gave birth inside the United States to 295,000 children in 2013, insuring that each gets "birthright citizenship," according to Census Bureau statistics in a preliminary new Pew Research Center survey.

The 295,000 represented 8 percent of all U.S. births in 2013.

The Pew report complements others from the Center for Immigration Studies, also based on Census data, that shows most illegal immigrant families tap welfare.

In the latest CIS analysis, it was shown that 87 percent of illegal immigrant families with just one child have taken taxpayer funded welfare. For all immigrant families, welfare use surges to nearly 94 percent when there are four children at home.

Pew said that the 2013 birth rate to "unauthorized-immigrant parents" was down from a 310,000 in 2012 and off the high of 370,000 in 2006 and 2007.

It added that their birth rate was higher than their percentage of the population. "There were an estimated 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in March 2013, according to a preliminary Pew Research estimate. They make up 4 percent of the population, but their share of births is higher because the immigrants include a higher share of women in their childbearing years and have higher birthrates than the U.S. population overall," said the report posted Friday.

The survey also notes that while Americans generally don't want to adjust the Constitution to prohibit so-called "birthright citizenship," where any child born in the U.S. is granted citizenship, there are political figures, including GOP front-running presidential candidate Donald Trump, who wants to repeal it.
