EDINBURG — U.S. Border Patrol reported seizing close to 7,000 pounds of marijuana over Labor Day weekend.

The first notable seizure was reported Friday when an agent noticed a suspicious vehicle driving away from the Rio Grande near McAllen at a high rate of speed. As agents approached, the driver abandoned the vehicle and made his way to Mexico, leaving behind close to a 1,000 pounds of marijuana.

A second notable seizure came Saturday morning; agents patrolling an area near Rio Grande City spotted a set of footprints. Soon after, the agents found a vehicle driving away from the area where the tracks had been. When agents tried to stop the vehicle, the driver ran off into the brush. Inside the truck, authorities found 80 bricks containing about 800 pounds of marijuana.
