African Immigrants Seek Refuge at Texas Shelter

African Immigrants Seek Refuge at Valley Shelter

SAN BENITO - The surge in African migrants continues to stream along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Last week, Mexican immigration authorities reported more than 400 African immigrants arrived in the country seeking asylum. Some were issued 20-day transit visas to reach the Rio Grande Valley.

Unlike the Sacred Heart Church Respite Center, where many Central Americans stay for a brief period of time, La Posada Providencia Shelter becomes the first home for many immigrants.

Kuku Admasu said she arrived at La Posada last year from Ethiopia. She said it took her 25 days to reach the Valley.

Admasu is seeking political asylum. She said her husband is currently in jail for his involvement in a local protest.

“If there’s no peace, you can’t live. Actually, if you have a child, the stay would be more hard. That’s why we leave from our country,” she said.

La Posada Providencia was founded in 1989 by the Sisters of Divine Providence. La Posada Providencia Program Director Sister Zita Telkamp said they have sheltered immigrants for months at their refuge.

“We serve people, more than 8,500 in our 27 years here.

    From about 80 different countries,”
    she said.

Sister Telkamp explained they have women and men dormitories. She said they also have a classroom where they can learn more about the U.S.

“We try to teach them life skills… When you leave La Posada, not everything is free,”

Sister Telkamp said many of them are still waiting to get their decision to stay in the country from immigration judges

Admasu said her next court date is in December. Until then, she said she will stay at La Posada Providencia.

Sister Telkamp said they sheltered 62 people in July. La Posada Providencia works closely with Catholic Charities. They are open 24 hours a day.

It is insanity that all of these people from so far away are coming here. There are other pockets of civilization out there. We are the foolish ones allowing these masses of poverty and destruction to come. We have millions here and coming who are not compatible with America. They need to stay near their homelands or fight it out there. We are a people dumping ground and in many cases have very little idea who the people coming are or their motives.
    Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
