Washington, DC--(HISPANIC RP WIRE)--October 3, 2006--Today at a reception at the 2006 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Public Policy Conference in Washington, DC., Allstate Insurance Company and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) awarded 12 Hispanic youth leaders with a Líderes de Hoy academic scholarship. In its second year, the national essay contest recognized six high school and six college scholars. For each category, one grand prize winner received a one-time scholarship of $10,000. The other five winners in each category received a one-time award of $5,000. Marco Davis, Director of Leadership Development for NCLR and Deborah Pickford, Corporate Relations Manager from Allstate, among others, recognized the winners for their extraordinary achievements and commitment to their community.

“Allstate, together with the National Council of La Raza, is proud once again to sponsor this contest and provide scholarships to young Hispanic leaders in our communities,” said Deborah Pickford. “The Líderes de Hoy national essay contest is helping young Latinos reach their career goals. We want to help inspire youth to become active leaders in their communities as they continue their education and begin to enter the workforce. Through the Líderes de Hoy national essay contest, Allstate and NCLR are helping to provide Latino youth with access to the resources and training needed to become successful leaders.”

The high school winners of the 2006 Líderes de Hoy national essay contest are Hedy Romero from Washington, DC.; Maria Becerra from San Fernando, CA; Tyler Sanchez from Racine, WI; Pedro Quintana from San Jose, CA; Greisa Martinez from Dallas, TX; and Daniel Giraldo from Apex, NC. The college winners are Cristian Arcega from Phoenix, AZ; Evelyn Flores from Las Vegas, NV; Eira Corral from Hanover Park, IL; Andrea Pardo from Kansas City, KS; Fabiola Torralba from San Antonio, TX; and Carolina Escalera from Tallahassee, FL.

“The need for more young Hispanics in leadership, community, and civic action is more apparent every day,” affirmed Marco Davis of NCLR. “Initiatives like the Líderes de Hoy national essay contest help empower and support young leaders while providing a financial and networking resource that contributes to their future goals. NCLR and Allstate are committed to discovering Latino civic leaders and helping them reach higher goals and greater leadership roles.”

Applicants to the national essay contest were asked to answer the question, “As a young leader, how have you been a catalyst for positive change and contributed to inspiring your community?” The essays were judged on the basis of the entrant’s commitment to his or her community, exemplary leadership, and promise of continued involvement in the community and civic affairs by a panel of high-profile leaders in the Hispanic community. I agree that they are a racist group no different than some white supremist groups in their beliefs. The only difference is that La Raza is considered legitimate by fools who can't seem them for what they really represent. This is scary as this error in judgement allowed Hitler to rule Germany and many other fanatics in other countries.

Can I assume all of these folks are citizens of the United States? Allstate insures my house, cars, and boat. Should I find out just one of the scholarship awardees is not legal, I'm will immediately start shopping for another insurance provider.
