FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A Springdale baker has been sentenced to five years of probation and fined $25,000 for knowingly employing illegal immigrants.
U.S. District Judge Jimm Hendren also fined Ayala's Family Bakery $20,000 and placed it on probation. The Northwest Arkansas Times reported Tuesday that owner Luis Ayala will spend the first six months of probation under house arrest.
Ayala pleaded guilty in November to harboring and concealing illegal immigrants as part of a plea agreement.
The Department of Homeland Security began investigating him after police stopped his girlfriend on a traffic violation and discovered she was in the country illegally. She said she met Ayala while working at the bakery.
Defense attorney Kirk Joyce is concerned that Ayala could be deported back to Mexico, even though he's in the country legally.
