Marshals arrest man wanted in Texas machete slaying

    Wednesday August 09, 2006
U.S. marshals in Elkins arrested an illegal immigrant suspected of hacking a Texas seafood shop owner to death with a machete in March.

Leon Lugo Andrade, 36, and his roommate, Luis H. Martinez, 33, were arrested at their apartment at the corner of Second Street and Henry Avenue on Monday.

Andrade awaits extradition to Houston to face a murder charge, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Alex Neville. Martinez will be deported home to Mexico.

Police say that on March 12 Andrade went to the Lucky Seafood Market in Houston to confront his ex-wife and their 14-year-old daughter where they worked. The shop's owner, the Rev. William Huang, 61, stepped in when Andrade became violent.

Andrade apparently believed she was involved with another man, possibly Huang, said Investigator Phillip Guerrero of the Houston Police Department's homicide division.

Andrade retrieved a machete from his van and chased Huang around a vehicle. Huang stumbled and Andrade attacked, Guerrero said. Parts of the killing were captured on surveillance video.

The suspect was last seen in April, police said. His van was found broken down on the side of a road in Georgia.

Someone there told investigators they gave Andrade a ride to a bus station in Atlanta to catch a bus to North Carolina. How or why he came to West Virginia remains a mystery.

On Thursday, U.S. marshals determined Andrade had been in the Elkins area and associating with Martinez. Both men were working in the lumber industry.

Marshals canvassed sawmills and lumber companies. At one sawmill, a person recognized a photo of Andrade, but said the man's name was Martin Lugo-Lugo.

Marshals contacted the owner of the apartment where the men were staying and learned there was a break-in there last week. On Monday, Neville and his partner posed as an insurance adjuster and a contractor gathering information about the break-in.

Andrade gave his alias but his real birth date. Marshals then arrested him and Martinez without incident.

Both men were hired by an employment agency that provides workers to local businesses. They gave false immigration cards and Social Security numbers.
Andrade's Social Security number came back to an Alabama resident who died in the 1980s. His alien identification number was for a person already in law enforcement custody.

Neville said Andrade had worked in the sawmill's lumberyard since April 11. Martinez had been there since Feb. 23.
