PHOENIX (AP) - A new sentencing date has been set for a man who bought rifles found at the scene of the fatal shooting of a Border Patrol agent and admitted to participating in a gun smuggling ring that was being monitored as part of the government's botched investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious.
Sentencing for 25-year-old Jaime Avila Jr. is set for Sept. 24.
Two rifles bought by Avila were found in the aftermath of a 2010 shootout that mortally wounded Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry near Nogales, Ariz.
Avila faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to gun charges.
Federal authorities faced criticism for allowing suspected straw gun buyers to walk away from gun shops with weapons, rather than arrest the suspects and seize the guns there.
