U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley on Tuesday asked federal officials for a tally of the costs of last week's immigration raid in Postville and similar enforcement actions in 2006 at Swift & Co. meatpacking plants in Marshalltown and five other Midwest cities.

"It is important that my constituents in Iowa and all U.S. taxpayers know how their tax dollars are being spent," the Waterloo Democrat said in a letter to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Assistant Secretary Julie Myers.

Tim Counts, a Midwest ICE spokesman, said it's not possible yet to calculate the costs for the Postville operation because it hasn't concluded. Counts also said he was not aware of any total costs calculated for the 2006 enforcement operations involving Swift plants.

Braley said it's important for federal immigration officials to be as transparent as possible when enforcement actions occur.

The congressman asked for a breakdown of ICE's expenses, including planning, execution, processing, detention and deportation costs. He also asked for the budgets of other cooperating agencies that assisted with the raids.

In the wake of the Postville raid, Braley said he supports an investigation into whether Agriprocessors Inc. violated workplace safety, child labor and immigration laws.

ITS PROBABLY EXPENSIVE. BUT ITS CHEAPER THAN SUPPORTING MILLIONS OF ILLEGALS THATS FOR SURE. AND IT BEGINS TO TAKE THE COUNTRY IN ANOTHER DIRECTION WHERE IMMIGRATION IS CONCERNED.

IF WE DONT DO THIS WE ARE DOOMED. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH CHEAPER TO NOT LET THIS MASS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION HAPPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE. AND I THINK THAT EMPLOYERS WHO GET CAUGHT HIRING ILLEGALS SHOULD PAY THE COST OF THE ENFORCEMENT THAT BECOMES NECESSARY BECAUSE OF THEIR ILLEGAL HIRING PRACTICES.

THERE IS NO REASON THE TAXPAYERS SHOULD HAVE TO FOOT THIS BILL. THESE EMPLOYERS ARE MAKING BEAUCOUP BUCKS DOING THIS...THATS WHY THEY DO IT. THEY SHOULD TALLY UP WHAT IT COSTS TO RAID THESE PLACES AND MULTIPLY BY TWO AND THEN CHARGE THE OWNERS OF THESE BUSINESSES.

No matter how much it cost. It would still be cheaper than giving them free school, healthcare for their babies and women,& foodstamps.
Free use of our highways, and all the new veichles they purchase with loans from our banks and return to Mexico with, That we pay for.

    good

    He's asking the wrong question.

Don't ask how much RAIDS cost, ask what is the price of illegal immigration to the future of our nation.
