As the seven-year anniversary of the Columbine school massacre in Colorado approaches, school officials on Long Island braced for a scare of their own this week. Threats of violence targeting Brentwood High School have put the school and parents on the lookout while police investigate. Authorities assure parents and students there is nothing to worry about, however.

"We immediately notified the Suffolk County Police Department when rumors of violence circulated over the Internet during spring break last week," says Brentwood School District Superintendent Les Black in a statement. "While no threat has been substantiated, we take all matters of this nature seriously, and have taken all precautionary measures," Black said. As a result, police officers are now stationed at the school and the administration has beefed up campus security.

Aside from the fact that the school takes the threat seriously, little information was available about the nature of the threat or if police had any suspects. "It would be inappropriate to comment further while the police conduct their investigation," Black said.

Police were tight-lipped as well. "The Suffolk County Police Department takes very seriously all information it receives about potential threats of violence in our schools and we deploy our personnel accordingly," says Inspector Aristides Mojica of the Chief of Department's office. "Rest assured, when we become aware of a potential threat, we act swiftly to provide security where needed."

Although the specific content of the threat or the website on which it was posted was unavailable, sources say it was attributed to MS-13, the gang otherwise known as Mara Salvatrucha. There are an estimated 10,000 MS-13 gangs in 33 states nationwide, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, which has a task force dedicated to this growing, increasingly violent band of criminals. The gang originates in El Salvador, but members are of various South American national descents.

If there's any consolation in the matter, it's that nearly a decade after that horrible Colorado high school tragedy, the lessons learned have not been forgotten.

Just makes a parent feel so secure in having their child educated in this school system........makes me ill.

Now that's a novel idea. Then these elitists might understand how the "Average Joe" feels about the invasion and existence of these gangs and DO SOMETHING about the problem rather than granting am-nasty and citizenship.

Those MS-13 fellows are merely following their unique lifestyle, living their culture.
