Brexit: France threatens to send Calais migrants to UK after historic EU Leave vote

THE mayor of Calais has threatened to send the “migrant jungle” camp across the Channel to Dover after Brits voted to leave the European Union.

Brexit has sent shockwaves across the globe.

The Prime Minister has resigned, Jeremy Corbyn could be on the brink of losing his job and Nicola Sturgeon has called for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

And there some who believe we could see a snap general election amid the confusion.

But the implications of yesterday’s vote might not stop there.

Natacha Bouchard, the mayor of Calais, has urged the French government to force the British to “take on the consequences of their choice”.

Britain and France are bound by the Tourquet agreement – a treaty which allows British border police and officials to operate in French ports.

Their job is to catch migrants attempting to stow away on trucks and lorries in their bid to make it to the UK.

But removing them from the transport hub could allow thousands to cross unmonitored and effectively move the infamous “jungle” to Dover.

She told French media: “The British must take on the consequences of their choice.

“We are in a strong position to push, to press this this request for a review and we are asking the President to bring his weight.

“We must put everything on the table and there must be an element of division of sharing.”

It echoes calls from Xavier Bertrand, the centre-right president of the Hauts-de-France region.

He tweeted: “The English wanted to take back their freedom, they must take back their border.”

And finance minister Emmanuel Macron said in February: “The day this relationship unravels, migrants will no longer be in Calais.”

Far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen has made similar threats.

Despite these claims, a French government spokesman stepped in today to allay fears of a breakdown in the deal.

He said: "On the question of immigration, to be clear, British exit from the European Union will not lead to changes in terms of immigration treaties with United Kingdom.

"These are bilateral treaties."
