Day laborers receive cameras to document Minutemen

KPBS SAN DIEGO (2006-05-04) Immigrants' rights activists are handing out cameras to day laborers in North County. Activists hope the workers will use the cameras to document the Minutemen. Minutemen have been taking video and photographs of day laborers for the past few months. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Claudia Smith with the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation says earlier this week three men who identified themselves as Independent Minutemen showed up at day laborer sites in Carmel Valley. She says they demanded to see day laborers' papers and insisted the workers leave the site. She says the Minutemen then took photos of the workers at point blank range.

Now Smith is passing out 50 cameras to day laborers at more than two dozen sites around North County.

So that if any of these individuals show up again, the day laborers will take their pictures. You know, we need to know who these people are and have a record of what they're doing.

Smith is investigating whether the Independent Minutemen impersonated federal agents, which is illegal.

She says the car the men traveled in has been showing up at day labor sites for the last few months. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
