Deportation at stake in NJ webcam spying case
Associated Press | Posted: Wednesday, March 14, 2012 10:40 am
A former Rutgers University student isn't facing just prison time if he's convicted of a hate crime for using a webcam to view his roommate's love life. He could also be deported to his native India, where he remains a citizen.
The jury began deliberating Wednesday in the trial of 20-year-old Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON' RAH'-vee) .
His roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide in September 2010, days after Ravi allegedly spied on his intimate encounter with another man.
If he's convicted of bias intimidation, the most serious charge, Ravi could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
Ravi has lived legally in the U.S. since he was a young child.
