Elvira Arellano is back in Chicago, agitating for amnesty and immigration reform, and using another child as a human shield. Her husband is nowhere to be seen. When last deported, Elvira was using her now teenage son the same way.

In case you forgot who Elvira Arellano is, a reporter from Progress Illinois writes, “Elvira Arellano, a Mexican woman who lived in a Humboldt Park church for a year to take shelter from deportation, returned to Chicago[.] … Arellano lived in the Adalberto United Methodist … in 2006, but was eventually deported to Mexico … in 2007[.]”

“Last week, the immigration activist [was] … detained after trying to get into the United States. Arellano has a U.S.-born teenage son as well as a four month-old son who was born in Mexico. She brought the baby with her[.]”

Chris Bergin, Arellano’s attorney, told the Chicago Sun-Times, “That probably factored into why they didn’t want to hold her in jail for too long. But I also imagine there was pressure from Washington DC, because her case was, and still is, high profile.”

“Arellano was permitted to come to Chicago ahead of her required hearing date. Arellano is expected to ask for political asylum or a humanitarian visa, her attorney told the newspaper.” With that asylum, Elvira will be free to protest on the streets of Chicago.

Eric Zorn, writing in the Chicago Tribune, remembers Elvira. “Elvira Arellano wasn't a good standard-bearer for immigration reform nearly eight years ago, and she's even worse for the cause today. Yet she's front and center again, having … taken up residence in the same West Side church[.]”

Human Shields from Mexico

International law considers the use of human shields to protect targets a war crime. The Israeli Defense Forces claim that Hezb'allah and Hamas use human shields to stop the IDF from shooting at gunmen and rocket launchers. Now, in the United States, illegal alien women are using their children as human shields to prevent deportation.

Many of the women like Elvira Arellano who come to the United States illegally know they stand a better chance of not being deported if they have children. In many immigration cases that use children as human shields, we find single women or women whose husbands are missing and probably still in Mexico.

The first question that ought to be asked by reporters who write about these women is, where are the fathers, and why are they not supporting their families? When Elvira was last in Chicago, Oscar Avila, a Chicago Tribune staff reporter, never asked about her use of her child as a human shield.

Oscar Avila writes, “A prominent activist for illegal immigrants in Chicago...defied a government order that she turn herself in to the Department of Homeland Security[.] … Homeland Security officials noted that Arellano had already been deported once, in 1997, and that she had a criminal conviction for Social Security fraud.’ This conviction makes her ineligible for U. S. citizenship.”

Elvira’s supporter, Pastor Walter “Slim” Coleman, “a longtime left wing activist,” justifies her breaking U.S. immigration laws. Coleman and his wife Emma Lozano, head of the immigration rights group Centro Sin Fronteras, seem not to question the use of human shields in their cause to undermine U.S. immigration laws.

Coleman and others claim with no documentation, “This nation’s unfair economic policies have impoverished the Caribbean and Latin America, forcing people to travel north in order to survive.” Rev. Coleman never bothers to ask why there are no jobs in Mexico for Elvira to do. He never asks what Carlos Slim Helú, a Mexican and one of the richest men in the world, is doing to create more jobs in Mexico.

Mayor Richard Daley, whose directive made Chicago a sanctuary city for illegal aliens, said at the time in support of Elvira Arellano, “You have to sit down and look at her and her family and how long she's been here and look at it in a personal way, not just another number.” Daley added, “And Chicago, it’s a city of immigrants. Our past, our present, our future will be immigrants.”

Marching for Justice?

Ironically, black Americans, who have the most to lose by an influx of poor Mexicans to Chicago, stand with their enemy. When Elvira was first in Chicago, “[n]ine influential African-American ministers ... prayed and laid hands on Elvira Arellano[.] ... [T]he ministers [were] part of a broad coalition called Clergy Speaks Interdenominational. They said Arellano is contesting an immoral government policy[.] ... They say even though Arellano broke the law, she should not face the prospect of being separated from her young son, who is a U. S. citizen.”

“Speaking from the pulpit at Adalberto United Methodist Church, where Arellano has lived as a fugitive since refusing to report for deportation, Reverend Albert Tyson said he hopes their support would increase the bonds between Latinos and African-Americans.”

Not much has changed since Elvira was last deported. Misguided Christians are still supporting her. “Bishop Sally Dyck became the third United Methodist bishop to be arrested since President’s Day in an international campaign calling for President Barack Obama to stop deporting immigrants with no criminal record, which is separating children from their parents.”

“We were marching for justice for our own people, members of our congregations and our communities,” Dyck said, reflecting on the day’s action, also led by Congressman Luis Gutierrez, human rights leader Elvira Arellano and more than 50 United Methodist clergy and laity.” Bishop Dyck never mentioned the word “illegal” in her comments to the media.

Elvira Arellano has a duty to follow the laws of the United States, not abuse them. Our immigration laws are far less harsh than comparable laws in Mexico. Why doesn’t Bishop Dyck go to Mexico and protest human rights abuses there?

Elvira Arellano also has a duty to seek the support of her son's father and return to Mexico, where she may work for social justice in her native country. In all likelihood, she won’t do that. The Democrats in Chicago need Mexican votes. They will use Elvira and any others they can dupe to get those votes.
