Ruben Arroyo-Ramirez

A man who officials said is in the country illegally has been charged with molesting an 11-year-old relative.

Ruben Arroyo-Ramirez, 42, of 1406 Classic Chase Drive, Dalton, was charged Thursday by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with aggravated child molestation and aggravated sexual battery. He was still in jail without bond as of late Friday afternoon.

“This is a case that just only recently came to our attention, but it happened in 2010,” said sheriff’s office Capt. Rick Swiney.

Swiney said a relative reported in March of this year there was “reason to believe he had sexually molested” the girl. When investigators tried to proceed, however, they learned Arroyo-Ramirez was in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at least partly because of his immigration status.

Swiney didn’t know Arroyo-Ramirez’s home country. He said the sheriff’s office wasn’t able to get Arroyo-Ramirez back from ICE until Thursday night.
