House Republicans Target Birthright Citizenship

WASHINGTON - House Republicans have filed a bill to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants.

The bill is similar to legislation introduced in the last Congress, which stalled in committee.

However the latest bill has been filed as a group of state lawmakers are trying to advance state legislation regarding birthright citizenship.

The bill's chief sponsors include Iowa Rep. Steve King who could soon be chairman of a House subcommittee that oversees immigration and citizenship.

U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants are considered citizens under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. The bill would alter immigration law to prevent such children from earning citizenship based on birth in the U.S.

Anchors automatically get citizenship.
They want to deny citizenship to anchors.

This would deny citizenship to anchor babies since they were born to illegal aliens that want to abuse the system we have in place. This is a really good start for the year and I will have to start making phone calls for support

If the Constitution already denies citizenship to illegal aliens and thereby would extend to the supposed "anchor," why not just clarify the Constitution? Why pass a law that would retroactively grant citizenship to those who never qualified in the first place?

Why not just a reading by the Congress as to the intent of the Constitution?

Where is automatic citizenship for those born to parents that are illegal aliens in the Constitution?

If one wishes to call it a good start by turning over a new leaf, then by all means knock your self out. The art of compromise seems to be alive and well.

Still looks like a backdoor amnesty. Looks like a setup for failure.

This is the opposite of amnesty.

Amnesty gives citizenship to illegal aliens.

This would stop giving citizenship to the kids of illegal aliens.

How can that be called a back door amnesty when it doesn't give amnesty to anyone? It doesn't give citizenship to anyone.

It stops kids from being citizens.
