CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An illegal immigrant linked to a New York City street gang was arrested Tuesday morning at a farm in Elkview where he was working, said Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Jeremy Honaker.

Alberto Mareo, 24, was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. He is wanted in Kings County, N.Y., for questioning in a 2009 gang-related homicide.

The joint arrest involved the U.S. Marshals Service, New York City Police Department, Kanawha County Sheriff's Office and Charleston area Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Mareo also is facing New York City drug charges and potential federal immigration charges.

Authorities said Mareo had taken extreme steps to conceal his identity.

He covered a neck tattoo with another tattoo, obtained several pieces of false identification and changed his name and appearance, Honaker said.

Mareo was arrested without incident at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and turned over to the custody of ICE. He will be held at South Central Regional Jail pending further court proceedings.

The owner of the farm will not be charged, Honaker said.

Each year investigations carried out by U.S. Marshals result in the apprehension of 34,000 federal fugitives and more than 27,000 state and local fugitives on felony charges.
