Jairo Ulices Benitez / St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office

Detectives with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested an illegal immigrant from Honduras for molesting a child.

Authorities arrested Jario Ulices Benitez, who lived in Opelousas, for two counts of molestation of a juvenile involving a 9-year-old victim.

“Detectives began investigating this case after we received an anonymous tip that abuse was possibly taking place,” Capt. Megan Vizena said in a statement. “After interviewing the victim, it was learned that Benitez was living in the victim’s home at the time of the incident.”

Vizena also said that in the investigation, it was discovered that Benitez, 32, is a native of Honduras and was living in Opelousas illegally. He flew back to Honduras after the allegations surfaced.

“Within the past week, we received a tip that he was back in town and that’s when we were able to take him into custody. We have also contacted the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Vizena said.

Benitez is currently being held at the St. Landry Parish jail with no bond and a hold for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
