Man to be deported after using false information to try to obtain ID

Man to be deported after using false information to try to obtain ID

3 hours ago • DAVE FOPAY JG-TC Staff Writer

CHARLESTON -- A prosecutor said a man will be deported after he tried to use documents with false information to obtain an Illinois identification card.

Roman Brovchuk, 20, for whom court records list a Chicago address, was accused of trying to get the state ID at the Charleston Illinois Secretary of State's facility on Oct. 31.

Brovchuk was charged with making a false application, a felony offense, in connection with the incident. However, with the agreement reached in his case, the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor and he was ordered to pay about $100 in fines and court fees.

During Brovchuk's court appearance, Coles County Assistant State's Attorney Tom Bucher said that he will now be deported. Circuit Judge Teresa Righter accepted the plea agreement, which Public Defender Anthony Ortega also recommended.

Case records indicate that Brovchuk told police he tried to use the false information because his visa had expired and he didn't want to return to Ukraine, his native country.

In other cases in court recently, guilty pleas were also entered by:

    • Olivio Cervantes, 58, for whom records list an address in Beach Park in Lake County, to a charge of aggravated driving under the influence alleging he was intoxicated and didn't have a valid driver's license when he was stopped in Mattoon on Jan. 22 of last year.

Other charges alleging Cervantes also had prior DUI convictions were dismissed and he was placed on probation for two years. The terms of the sentence included alcohol treatment and payment of more than $2,000 in fines and court fees.

Jail time was also imposed but it was stayed, meaning Cervantes won't have to serve it unless he violates some of his probation requirements. Traffic citations were also dismissed.

Circuit Judge Mitchell Shick accepted a plea agreement that Bucher and defense attorney Paul Bishop of Olney recommended.

    • Brad A. Malone, 39, whose most recent address on record is an apartment at 512 N. 15th St., Mattoon, to an obstructing justice charge alleging he lied about his identity to police to try to avoid arrest on Sept. 29.

Malone was placed on probation for 2-1/2 years with terms including about $600 in fines and stayed jail time. Shick accepted a plea agreement that Assistant State's Attorney Gabriel Siehr and Ortega recommended.

Case records indicated that Malone was trying to keep from being arrested for violations of probation sentences he received for earlier convictions for violation of an order of protection.

    • Crystal Hernandez, 29, who listed "homeless" in court records, to an obstructing justice charge alleging she gave Mattoon police false information on Oct. 30 to try to avoid arrest on Douglas County warrants.

The charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor and Hernandez was fined about $550. Shick accepted a plea agreement that Bucher and Ortega recommended.

Are all of these folks illegal, or just the first one?
