A man remained hospitalized at Valley Regional Medical Center Wednesday afternoon, claiming he fell from the border fence while crossing into the United States, authorities said.
The man was found about 9:25 a.m. Wednesday by a man clearing brush near the area, said Agent Henry Mendiola, spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector.
The man flagged down nearby Border Patrol agents and told them where the injured man could be found, authorities said. He was discovered near the Galaxia area off U.S. Military Highway 281 in Brownsville.
The man told the agents he injured himself falling from the fence, Mendiola said. The immigrant said he crossed from Matamoros to Brownsville two days before he was found.
Authorities said the man suffered a fracture to his spine and after being treated at VRMC’s emergency room he likely would be hospitalized.
The man’s nationality was not immediately known.
