Man Shot By Trooper On I-49 Was Illegal Immigrant Wanted In Car Theft, Chase

    By John Lovett

A man shot by an Arkansas State Police officer Monday morning near Mountainburg was identified by the Crawford County prosecuting attorney as an illegal immigrant wanted in a stolen car chase out of Lowell this weekend.

Gil Antonio Rameriz-Lemus, 45, of Springdale is in stable condition at a local hospital after being shot three times by a state trooper just off of Interstate 49 in Crawford County. The trooper has not been named yet.

“The State Police investigation is continuing and there is an expectation we will release the name of the State Trooper as early as tomorrow,” State Police spokesman Bill Sadler wrote in an email.

Around 6 a.m. Monday, a call was made about a person walking on I-49. A trooper made contact with the suspect at the 32-mile marker.

It is alleged that Rameriz-Lemus was involved in a stolen car chase with Lowell police Sunday evening. The vehicle was reported stolen in Springdale earlier that day and the suspect was able to elude police involved in the chase.

According to Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney Marc McCune, the state trooper fired three shots after attempts to communicate and the use of a Taser failed. The trooper was threatened with a rock.

“The trooper deployed his Taser and Rameriz-Lemus was struck and went to one knee,” McCune wrote in an email. “He then pulled the prong of the taser out. The taser did not have any effect on him other than causing him to momentarily go to one knee.”

Rameriz-Lemus walked onto I-49, causing traffic to slow down and stop. He continued to refuse any commands of the trooper and made a motion like he was going to throw a large rock at the trooper, McCune wrote.

Rameriz-Lemus had two large rocks in his hand and made threatening movements toward the officer, McCune states. The suspect refused to drop the rocks and refused to obey the officers commands before being shot, McCune stated.

That is when the trooper shot him three times, two striking his stomach area and one in the leg.

McCune states that Rameriz-Lemus is classified as “not a U.S. citizen” by the Department of Homeland Security and he has “been previously deported on at least one occasion.”

Prior to the shooting, a possible vehicle accident was called in Sunday night and a trooper with Troop H located the accident around the 34 mile marker of Interstate 49 with its lights and wipers on, but no one present. This vehicle was the same one involved in the chase and the one reported stolen, McCune wrote. The vehicle was towed.

Several witnesses gave statements to the Arkansas State Police and at least one, a member of the National Guard, got out to assist the trooper prior to the shooting.

“I am expecting all the reports, witness statements, and police car video by the end of the week and will review the investigation as to any wrongdoing by both the trooper and Rameriz-Lemus,” McCune added.

The illegals are accustomed to using rocks and getting away with it. Not this time.
