A 36-year-old Mexican citizen who returned to Norwich after being deported was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison Tuesday for illegally re-entering the United States.

According to the office of U.S. Attorney David B. Fein, Roman Ponce, 36, was deported to Mexico in 1999 after being convicted of domestic assault, assault and disorderly conduct in Rhode Island.

He re-entered the United States and was convicted in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island in 2001 of illegally re-entering the United States. He was sentenced to six months of imprisonment and deported to Mexico in 2002.

On Sept. 30, Ponce was arrested by the Norwich Police Department for disorderly conduct. He has been detained in federal custody since Feb. 6. On April 16, he pleaded guilty to one count of illegal re-entry of a removed alien.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Slater.
