Mexican senators call for halt to U.S. ambassador's "interventionism"

Senators from opposition parties on Friday called on Mexico's Foreign Ministry to stop what they described as "interventionism" by U.S. ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza.

Senators from the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI) asked the ministry to publish a diplomatic statement to condemn Garza's behavior.

On Thursday, Garza reiterated a warning that violence in Mexico "remains active" after a meeting between senior officials from both governments in Laredo, a border city in the southern U.S. state of Texas.

PRD senator Arturo Herviz said Garza was interfering constantly and had made anti-Mexico statements.

Garza should look first at his nation, Herviz said, "there is a constant state of alert about possible terrorist attacks that is used as a pretext for the violation of fundamental human rights."

Carlos Jimenez Macias, spokesman for the PRI group in the Senate, said that Garza lacked the moral grounds to complain about Mexican violence.
