MEXICO CITY (AP) " Mexico's federal police say they have arrested one of the men suspected in the 2010 slaying of 72 migrants by a drug cartel.

Investigators said the migrants were killed for refusing to join the Zetas drug cartel and their bodies were dumped on a ranch in the town of San Fernando in the border state of Tamaulipas.

Federal police announced Tuesday they had arrested Jose Guadalupe Reyes Rivera Monday at a mechanics shop in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas state.

Police said Reyes Rivera was sent to a federal prison in Matamoros.

In December, Mexico's national human rights commission criticized the government investigation, authorities failed to gather forensic evidence, preserve bodies and perform autopsies on time. Twelve of the dead remain unidentified and buried in a common grave.
