Mitt Romney could be stripped of Maine win

Last Saturday, the Maine Republican Party declared Mitt Romney the winner of the Maine caucuses. The non-binding caucuses were a low turnout affair, but Romney's victory over Ron Paul - who he beat by less than 200 votes - was a chance for Romney to reclaim some momentum in the wake of Rick Santorum's three-state sweep four days earlier.

Now, however, it looks like Romney could ultimately be stripped of that victory. If that happens, it will be the second time this cycle Romney has been stripped of a caucus victory. The first came in Iowa, where Santorum was declared the winner following a (flawed) recount.

The Maine GOP allowed communities to schedule their caucuses between Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 if they wanted them to be counted in the final tally. Some areas elected to schedule their caucuses outside that window, and the Maine GOP said those caucuses would not count. Fair enough. But according to the Bangor Daily News, some caucuses that took place within the designated window were also not counted.

In addition, one important caucus - in Washington County - was rescheduled from last Saturday, when it would have been within the window, to this Saturday due to the threat of bad weather. Paul's campaign questioned the decision to move the caucus, suggesting political interference; in a statement stating the weather report did not predict a serious storm, it said "the votes of Washington County would have been enough to put us over the top. This is an outrage."

Paul actually didn't do well in Washington County in the 2008 cycle, but his campaign saw it as a stronghold this time around. And Paul supporters have been pushing backers of the Texas lawmaker to show up in droves this Saturday for the rescheduled caucuses. In light of the low-turnout nature of the caucuses - Romney's vote total was just 2,190 - a big turnout there could swing the race, if the caucus ends up being counted.

Politico obtained an email from the Maine GOP suggesting officials are now engaged in a recount. It remains unclear if the party plans to officially change the vote totals, or if it will decide to count the rescheduled Washington Country caucus.

The Maine caucuses are non-binding, so it doesn't technically matter who won - delegates to the national convention will actually be decided at Maine's state convention in early May. But headlines stating that he actually didn't win the Maine caucuses could hamper Romney, particularly if they come at the wrong time. The Maine GOP is currently schedule to meet on March 10 - the Saturday after Super Tuesday - when it plans to revisit the caucus results.

I totally disagree. Personally, I think Romney is our best chance at dealing with many of our illegal alien issues. He has many 'tough on illegal immigration' folks in his corner. I seriously suspect there is a reason for that. Furthermore, he has taken the toughest stance on illegal immigration, which means we have the ammunition necessary to hold his feet to the fire. Comparing Romney to McCain is not even a consideration. Romney is a little moderate for my liking on some issues, but on immigration I think he's our best bet. Honestly, I don't even see that as debatable.

I don't agree, while I would very much like to agree with you I believe Romney is left of McCain and I doubt
very seriously is a strong 2nd amendment supporter. A true conservative out of Massachusetts would be rare.

Sanctorum has better grades at NumbersUSA and Romney has yet to say anything about chain immigration or the visa lottery. He also supports more skilled immigration to the US and seems oblivious to the fact that right now we have millions of skilled Americans out of work.

Romney does not support amnesty or a path to citizenship for illegal aliens. He wants to deport all illegal aliens back to their country of origin. He says the illegal immigrants will be given a grace period to pack their bags and leave. If they want to become legal they should go to the back of the line for the legal immigration process. "They should be given some transition period of time to allow them to settle their affairs and then return home and get in line -- at the back of the line with everybody else that wants to come here... no favoritism for permanent residency or citizenship for those that have come here illegally." Simply put, "people who come here legally get a work permit. People who do not come here legally do not get a work permit."
Romney believes illegal immigrants are coming to the United States because of the "magents" the U.S. provides, or, the incentives illegal immigrants have to come to the U.S. "when employers are willing to hire people who are here illegally, that’s a magnet, and it draws them in. And we went in and talked about sanctuary cities, giving tuition breaks to the kids of illegal aliens, employers that, employers that knowingly hire people who are here illegally. Those things also have to be stopped."
Romney proposes to end these incentives for illegal immigrants coming over. "If I’m president, we’ll put in an E-Verify system... We have to crackdown on employers that hire people that are here illegally... We are going to have an identification card for people who come here legally.... The employer must then check the card with E-Verify or a similar system." In addition, we have to turn "off the magnets of amnesty, in-state tuition for illegal aliens, employers that knowingly hire people that have come here illegally... we have to finally have immigration laws that protect our border, secure the border, turn off the magnets, and make sure we have people come to this country legally to build our economy."
Romney is against the DREAM Act, and says it is a "handout."12 "I'd staple a green card to the diploma of anybody who's got a degree of math, science, a Masters degree, Ph.D."
In 2005, he said the McCain-Kennedy bill, which would support a path to citizenship, was “reasonable,” but later said it was “offensive” and he does not support any form of amnesty.3 Romney has not stated his position on birthright citizenship,4 but has said he wants to end "chain migration."5

Romney still winner after recount of caucuses

PORTLAND, Maine—A recount of votes in the Maine Republican presidential caucuses shows that Mitt Romney has increased his lead over Ron Paul.

The party last Saturday announced Romney was the narrow winner over Ron Paul, with a 194-vote winning margin out of 5,585 votes. Rick Santorum came in third and Newt Gingrich in fourth.

The party decided to recount the votes after determining that votes from caucuses in Waterville, Belfast and a number of other towns were left out of the final results, and that the tallies for Paul and Romney were reversed in Portland.
