MUSLIM REFUGEE INFLICTS 'CARNAGE' INSIDE OHIO RESTAURANT

MUSLIM REFUGEE INFLICTS 'CARNAGE' INSIDE OHIO RESTAURANT

Police refuse to ID machete-wielding assailant in 'systematic attack'

The Nazareth Mediterranean Restaurant in Columbus, Georgia, was attacked by a suspected Muslim man from Somalia Thursday night.

A Muslim man from Somalia, likely a refugee or son of a refugee, attacked patrons at a restaurant owned by a Christian Arab Israeli in Columbus, Ohio, Thursday night but police are refusing to release the suspect’s name.

    CBS News
was first to identify the attacker, who entered the Nazareth Mediterranean Restaurant with a machete and began slashing people, as a Somali man named Mohammad Barry.

“He came to each table and just started hitting them,” one of the diners, Karen Bass, told CBS News. “There was a man on the floor bleeding, there was blood on the floor. It was awful. It was just carnage.”

Four people were wounded in the machete attack, one critically.

The owner of the restaurant, Hany Baransi, who is a Christian Arab from Israel, said he had not taken a day off since Jan. 2 but took off Thursday night because of a migraine headache. He is a proud Israeli citizen who flies the Israeli flag in his restaurant.

“Obviously we were targeted because there’s a whole bunch of businesses around here,” he told the Columbus Dispatch.

As an Arab Christian who supports Israel, he described himself as “the minor, minor, minor of the minority. So nobody likes me.”

Watch restaurant owner Hany Baransi’s interview with the Columbus Dispatch:

Police said the man entered the restaurant and asked for the owner.

He came back an hour later with the machete and started hacking patrons.

"This was a brutal attack," said Sgt. Rich Weiner, with Columbus Police. "The second time, nothing was said. He just came in and started the attack."

"Right now there's nothing that leads us to believe that this is anything but just a random attack," Weiner said.

Two men left the restaurant and called 9-1-1 while another threw chairs at the attacker.

Another patron reportedly reached for something behind the register and that's when the jihadist stopped his assault and fled. After a five-mile car chase he exited his vehicle with the machete.

That's when officers shot him dead.

The attacker may have traveled to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, in 2012, CBS reported, citing unnamed federal law enforcement officials.

Columbus a favorite dumping ground for Somali refuges

Columbus is home to the second-largest Somali-American community after Minneapolis.

And how did all the Somalis get in Columbus?

    image: http://www.wnd.com/files/2016/02/nazareth-225x300.jpg

As WND has reported in a series of articles, the main route into the United States for Somali nationals is through the refugee resettlement program. The U.S government has since 1992 worked with the United Nations to permanently resettle more than 110,000 Somali refugees into dozens of U.S. cities, including Minneapolis, Columbus, San Diego, and smaller cities in Maine, Texas, Idaho, Washington, Georgia, Michigan, Colorado and Texas.

More than 99 percent of Somali refugees are Sunni Muslims and the FBI has confirmed that at least 40 young Somali men have left their adopted homeland since 2007 to join the ranks of foreign terrorist organizations including al-Shabab in Somalia and ISIS in Syria.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has been supportive of the refuge resettlements in his state. Like many GOP governors he has questioned the quality of the vetting of Syrian refugees, but nothing has been said about Somali refugees.

    image: http://www.wnd.com/files/2016/02/kasich.jpg
Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a contender for the GOP presidential nomination, has supported the resettlement of Muslim refugees in his state.

Since 2002 the U.S. State Department has delivered 7,020 Somali refugees to Ohio, and 5,852 of them have been sent to Columbus, according to the federal refugee database.

CBS News homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reported that investigators were searching for a motive, running down leads to try to determine if the attack was "somehow tied to terrorist organizations."

So far the attack has received little attention in the national media. CNN ran the story under the headline "Man with machete hurts 4 in Ohio" and failed to name the suspect or his nationality. Fox News also played down the story and did not mention the attacker's Somali Muslim heritage or the fact that Columbus is home to a large community of Somali refugees.

Cruz, Sessions demand Obama stop hiding jihad attacks

It took more than five months for the Justice Department to decide that the July 2015 mass shooting that killed five U.S. servicemen in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as a terrorist attack.

That attack was carried out by Mohammed Youssef Abdulazeez, who emigrated to the U.S. from Kuwait with his parents at the age of 6.

In November last year Faisal Mohammad unleashed a knife attack on fellow students at University of California-Merced, a case that received almost no national media attention and was never ruled a terrorist attack by the Obama administration.

See WND's Big List of Muslim terror attacks and attempted terror attacks covered up by the FBI.

The 2009 attack by Maj. Nidal Hason at Fort Hood, Texas, that killed 13 soldiers was ruled "work place violence."

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, recently sent a letter calling on the Obama administration to stop covering up the arrests of Muslim jihadists inside the U.S.

The letter states that since early 2014 there have been 113 arrests of Muslims implicated in terrorist activity on U.S. soil and the Obama administration refuses to provide an immigration history on any of them. Most of the cases have received little or no coverage in the national media.

The restaurant in Ohio remains closed while police investigate.

Thank you Sen. Jeff Sessions and Sen Ted Cruz for calling Obama out on this. Now you guys need to get the rest of those lunkheads in the U.S. Congress to come together and get something done about this!

Sources: FBI investigating Ohio machete attack as possible lone wolf terror act

    Published February 13, 2016 FoxNews.com

NOW PLAYINGFBI investigation into Ohio machete attack
Law enforcement sources close to the investigation into a machete attack at an Ohio restaurant told Fox News Friday that federal authorities are investigating the incident as a potential lone wolf terror attack.

FBI investigators have not yet found any evidence to suggest the attack was directed by Islamic State or any other foreign terror organization, but federal authorities are still running down the possibility that Mohammad Barry was inspired by terrorist propaganda.

Columbus police identified Barry, 30, as the attacker at Nazareth Restaurant and Deli. Barry entered the restaurant Thursday night and wounded four patrons before being killed by police in a confrontation a few miles away.

It’s unclear what motivated Barry’s attack, but it appears he was known to the FBI.

Columbus police called in federal anti-terrorism officials after they realized from a computer alert that the suspect's car had been flagged by authorities, The Columbus Dispatch reported late Friday.

A Columbus police spokesman told the paper the move to call in the feds was tied to “something that’s in the (computer) system that came back about the vehicle and this person.” The spokesman, Sgt. Rich Weiner, referred questions about the nature of the computer alert to the FBI.

The paper reported that FBI officials in the Cincinnati office couldn't be reached for comment, and quoted those in Washington as saying that agents were assisting Columbus police but had no further information.

A source told Fox News earlier Friday the FBI is scouring Barry’s background, which includes interviewing associates and digging into his travel history. Fox is also told that investigators are looking to Barry’s digital and online footprint for terrorist propaganda or evidence of communication with extremists.

Police said the suspect walked into the restaurant around 5:30 p.m. and spoke with an employee before leaving. Local reports said he asked for the owner, but police did not confirm that. The suspect returned nearly 30 minutes later with machete in hand and attacked a couple, and then turned on diners who came to their aid, police said.

The suspect fled in a car, which was eventually stopped by cops, triggering the fatal encounter.

According to local reports, as officers approached the man’s vehicle, he got out with a knife in one hand and the machete in the other. After an unsuccessful attempt to subdue the man with a Taser, he lunged towards cops forcing them to open fire.

Barry’s former roommate said he was baffled by the incident and described the machete-wielding man as extremely private.

“It’s not something I expected from him honestly. It was just shocking,” Souley Balde told My Fox 28 Columbus.

Balde said Barry was originally from Guinea.

Nazareth has been open for 20 years and is a popular spot for locals in the neighborhood, in which the owner is not for greeting customers with a baseball bat in attempt at lighthearted humor.

It was not clear if there was any political or racial motivation for the attack, but the Nazarath is known for its multiculturalism. The entrance is adorned with a small Israeli flag and the Arabic phrase, "Ahlan Wa Shalan" which translates to "You are my family, take it easy."

Oh come on, this is simply work place violence. It happens all the time. It had nothing whatsoever to do with the man being a Muslim refugee from Somalia who hates Christians and Jews. There's no such thing as radical Islamic terrorism. Islam is a religion of peace. Nothing to see here. Move along. Go back to sleep.

Friends of the family told NBC4 he is from Guinea but has lived in the United States since he was very young. His parents live out of state, and are expected to be here tomorrow. . .

Nazareth Restaurant owner says he's debating moving back to Israel

COLUMBUS (WCMH)– Owner Hany Baransi said he is unsure of the fate of his restaurant after a machete attack left several people injured at the establishment.

While Nazareth Mediterranean Cuisine will open for normal business hours on Friday, Baransi tells NBC4 he is contemplating going back to Israel, or taking a break from the business.

It’s been a week since the machete attack was carried out at his restaurant.

Baransi said he is just now starting to process what happened, including knowing his friend Bill Foley is still in the hospital.

“It’s not easy to live with the guilt of seeing my best friend laying in bed because of me a hospital bed fighting for his life because of me,” he said.

He said he has some safety concerns.

“I’m scared to be here for my employees for my staff. I’m scared. At least I feel like if I’m not here and people know that I’m not here, maybe they’ll leave my staff alone,” said Baransi.

Baransi also expressed his disappointment in the fact that the crime has not yet been recognized or confirmed for what he believes it was.

“Okay, you don’t want to call it terrorism. How about hate crime, discrimination, anything you know.”

Baransi said he is disappointed there wasn’t more of an outpouring of support from government leaders.

“Maybe just a word from somebody high up just to say, ‘Hey we’re thinking of you. We support you. We’re sorry you had to deal with this.'”

Micki Zakas, Baransi’s friend and the restaurant accountant, said staff and family will “somehow” be stronger as a result.

“It changes people. It just brings the hate of the world into your life and that changes people,” she said.

“With strength, this will pass and we will all somehow manage to get stronger after this. It will make us stronger.”
