Greensboro, NC -- A hot topic on the campaign trail is national security, specifically immigration. Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page went to the U.S./Mexico border to meet with law enforcers from around the country.

He got back into town Sunday night, and we caught up with him and one of his lieutenants at PTI to find out how the border training went in El Paso, Texas.

Sheriff Page told us the biggest part of the class was about the Mexican drug cartels.

"The drugs we are seeing coming across the borders and other related issues that tie in because what happens at the border doesn't stay there. And, I'm sad to report today that this is my second trip to the border and the borders still are not secure," said Sheriff Sam Page, Rockingham County.

Sheriff Page and other sheriffs from across the nation met with border patrol agents in Texas, to get a better look at what's really going on there.

"Just in El Paso city, the sad thing is the Mexican drug cartels control just as much turf on the Mexican side of the border as they do in the United States. And, that's scary."

When they control that turf, when they control that port of entry. There's no telling what's going to come across our borders," said Page.

Sheriff Page emphasized that it only takes a couple days to get things from the border, to here in the Triad.

He urged viewers to contact their lawmakers and voice the importance of securing our borders.
