LAKEWOOD — Police arrested two township residents on weapons charges following a motor vehicle stop early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Patrolman Jeremy Felder received an anonymous tip about a group of people who may have going to a party and who may have been in possession of weapons, said Capt. Paul Daly.

Around 1:50 a.m., Felder spotted a sport utility vehicle matching the description he’d been given and he pulled it over near Finchley Boulevard and Princewood Avenue after the driver went through a red light, the captain said.

The officer saw movement inside the vehicle, which was occupied by four or five people, so he called for backup and removed the occupants, police said.

That’s when Felder spotted a handgun sticking out from under the seat, Daly said.

Police said they also found a machete and brass knuckles with a knife, inside the vehicle.

Jesus Avila-Cortes, 19, of Miller Road, was charged with possession of a firearm and possession of a prohibited weapon – the brass knuckles.

Santiago Garcia, 21, of Laurel Avenue, was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes after police determined the machete belonged him, the captain said. Police said they determined both men were illegal immigrants.

Garcia was also wanted by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement for illegal reentry, police said.

Both men were sent to the Ocean County jail, Toms River, with bail set at $20,000 on the Lakewood charges. ICE also issued detainers for the men.

The other occupants of the vehicle were not charged.

The Asbury Park Press asked police for a photo of the defendants, and is awaiting a response.
