Jorge Cornell trial set to begin Wednesday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The federal racketeering trial centered around a former Greensboro city council candidate is set to begin this morning.
According to the U.S. District court in Winston-Salem, jury selection begins in the case involving Jorge Cornell and the state chapter of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation gang.
The trial has been delayed four times since the start of the year, and prosecutors expect it will last several months, with just over half of the 14 gang members indicted actually involved in this case.
The indictment includes charges of conspiracy to commit murder, extortion of local businesses, and robbery among several other accusations.
Cornell ran for Greensboro City Council in 2011, and is described by supporters in a polar opposite light from what authorities lay out in the indictment.
He’s been described as an advocate for racial and ethnic unity by those supporters, including faith leaders, over the past several years.
The trial is set to begin today at 9:30 a.m.
