Neb. group to take up Fremont's immigration law

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The city of Fremont's ban on renting to and hiring illegal immigrants has raised concerns among members of a Nebraska committee that reports to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Jose Soto, a member of the Nebraska Advisory Committee, says the voter-approved ordinance has the potential to infringe on people's civil rights.

He says that, combined with the potential for other immigration-related legislation at local and state levels, prompted the committee to allow testimony on the Fremont ordinance at its Wednesday meeting in Lincoln.

Soto says that of particular concern is the potential for state legislation similar to Arizona's divisive immigration law.

Glad you posted this. This public hearing is tomorrow, Wed Sept 8th, in Lincoln, NE. I’m attending.

As I figured, this Mr. Jose Soto, who is on the committee, is anti-enforcement. I’ve been trying to encourage other pro-enforcement advocates to attend. I’m hoping the majority of attendees aren’t the usual crowd of Aiders and Abettors, but unfortunately its likely. It sounds like Mr. Soto thinks this meeting is all about condemning the Fremont ordinance -- I hope he is UNpleasantly surprised.

What is interesting is that the current chair of this committee on Civil Rights is Glenn Freeman, a scholar and speaker on the U.S. Constitution. He is kind of a regional celebrity with the area Tea Party/9-12 groups in Iowa and Nebraska. He has spoke at many events. I’ve heard him speak, and at least that time he addressed the issue of illegal immigration, and was pro-enforcement. Though I never assume just because someone is conservative or even a Tea Partier, that they are pro-enforcement, but in this case, I have understood Mr. Freeman to be pro-enforcement.

Mr. Freeman is African American. That is relevant for a few reasons. First, because if he does express pro-enforcement views, it is more difficult for others to accuse him of racism, than if he were white. Especially when he is the Chair of a civil rights committee. Also, here he chairs this committee on Civil Rights, and at the same time he is a conservative and constitutional scholar who is involved with the Tea Parties and grassroots conservative groups. I would have thought the Chair of this committee would be all anti-enforcement, as Mr. Jose Soto is, but when I found out it is Glenn Freeman, I was even more curious to attend.
